  • Fans have praised Eddie and Buck’s chemistry
  • Guzman compares their bond to Scrubs‘ J.D. and Turk, highlighting their playful yet deeply caring dynamic

Ryan Guzman admits he has thoughts about how his character Eddie might react if his best friend Buck ever confesses any romantic feelings.

9-1-1 fans have been clamoring for Eddie and Buck (Oliver Stark) to become a couple after Guzman, 38, joined the show in season 2. Since then, showrunner Tim Minear and the rest of the writers have played up the actors' natural chemistry, playing into both the characters' bickering dynamic and their willingness to do anything, including risking their lives, for one another.

To some viewers, the relationship reads romantic, but in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on May 8, Guzman said that's a question for the writers to answer.

"That would be more of a question for Tim [Minear], to be honest, and I wouldn't want to speculate on their own answers," he said on the potential for the best friends to become something more. Guzman added, "I think from a writing standpoint, maybe that limits the tension, or the opportunities for possibilities. There's so much to say that I wouldn't be able to give you a full answer."

Still, the actor does have some thoughts on how Eddie might react if Buck, who is bisexual, ever said he has feelings for him. "I think the truth of Eddie at this point in time is leading into that naivety. And if Buck were to present anything else [to him other than friendship], I haven't even wrapped my head around how Eddie would understand how to move forward with that — other than being caught off guard, I guess," he explained.

Guzman went on to say that for Eddie, "It's almost like when something's so close, you can't see [the bigger picture]. It's right under your nose, but you can't see it. I think that's how it's meant to be played."

As for how Guzman plays Eddie's dynamic with Buck, he told THR that he pulls from his own experiences with his friends. "That's his best friend, and he cares about him in a very, very deep way. I pull from my own experiences [and] my best friends. I'd do anything and everything I possibly could for them, especially their families," he said.

Season 9, which concluded on Thursday, May 7, included a standout episode, "Mother's Boy," focusing on Eddie and Buck's road trip back to Los Angeles going horribly wrong. In the episode, the pair end up in a car accident, and while Eddie is taken to the hospital, Buck is kidnapped.

Guzman said the fans' reaction to the episode, which briefly became the show's highest rated episode on IMDb (it's now the third-highest rated), speaks for itself. "I feel like we found the secret sauce with that relationship — the back and forth [between] Buck and Eddie — and the fans spoke for themselves for that episode. I believe it did really, really good [ratings-wise]," he said.

Earlier in season 9, Guzman reflected on Buck and Eddie's bond in an interview with PEOPLE. At the time, he likened them to Scrubs' dynamic duo, J.D. (Zach Braff) and Turk (Donald Faison).

"The two main characters, Turk being who he is, it was one of my favorite shows, to be honest," he explained at the time. "I just love the playfulness of both characters and how they were actually able to be vulnerable in front of each other the same way we play off each other in a medical setting, and a very high stakes setting."

Still, Guzman made it clear in his interview with THR that there's no way of predicting where the 9-1-1 writers will take the characters next.

He said, "That relationship continues to evolve, and what it's evolved to already is more than Oliver and I even had intended for, let alone understood, in the beginning."
