3 Dead, 5 Injured After Teen Driver Strikes Crowd of Pedestrians at 'High Speed' in California

The juvenile driver was taken to the hospital and arrested, police told a local media outlet

Three people have died and five others have been left injured after a car struck pedestrians in Oakland, California.

The crash occurred at 85th Avenue and International Boulevard just before 11:15 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 16, according to the Oakland Fire Department, which posted about the incident the following morning on X. 

It stated that a “vehicle struck cars and pedestrians,” and reported that three people were dead upon arrival. Three others were taken to local hospitals, including two in critical condition and one in serious condition. 

Two other people were awaiting medical transport, including the suspect, with minor injuries.

The unnamed driver is a juvenile, police told the Los Angeles Times. They were taken to the hospital and arrested.

Police also told ABC that it was "unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this collision." 

In a statement, officials told the outlet: “During the investigation, it appeared that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on 85th Avenue and made a westbound turn onto International Boulevard, striking a parked vehicle and several pedestrians in the area.” 

The suspect allegedly tried to walk or run away from the scene, but was stopped and detained by witnesses until Oakland police officers arrived, fire officials told the San Francisco Chronicle.  

The identity of the three victims has not been publicly released by authorities, according to ABC.

The Oakland Fire Department warned locals to “avoid the area” in its statement on the morning of Sunday, May 17, with the SF Chronicle stating that a large police and fire presence remained at the scene. 

PEOPLE contacted the Oakland Police Department and Oakland Fire Department were contacted for further information, but did not immediately receive a response.
