Josh Hart and his wife, Shannon, have come a long way since meeting as high school sophomores. Now navigating the demands of the NBA, celebrating a championship and raising twin toddlers together, the couple says the foundation of their relationship hasn’t changed.
“It’s a lot of patience, a deep friendship, understanding each other, knowing each other for a long time,” Shannon, 31, tells PEOPLE exclusively at Vita Coco’s inaugural Pit Stain Pit Stop in New York City on July 24. “I think that’s how it works.”
The couple, who wed in 2021 and are parents to 3-year-old twin sons Hendrix and Haze, have made the most of this championship summer after the Knicks clinched their first title in 53 years in June. With the upcoming season approaching, Shannon tells PEOPLE she is often reminding Hart, 31, to prioritize self care amid the taxing NBA lifestyle.

“I’m always keeping him accountable,” she says. “Day after day, he still kinda does the stuff he did when he was 21. So sometimes I just have to remind him, like, you gotta keep your body in check, you gotta eat right, you gotta put the electrolytes in, you know? So I just, like, try to, you know, tell him, like, make sure to take care of your body.”
Of course, not every conversation between the couple is quite so serious. When asked who takes longer to get ready before leaving the house, Hart offered an immediate response.
“Oh, her. One hundred percent,” he says with a laugh. “My brother’s right behind us. He can attest every time we have to be somewhere, we’re always in the car waiting for her.”

Shannon quickly fired back, insisting her husband turned a few extra minutes into a larger ordeal. “For, like, two minutes. It’s not, like, crazy,” she says.

Rather than complain about the extra time, Josh says he’s found a way to make it work.
“At least when she does that, I’m able to kind of kick back, relax, chill a little bit, get my hydration right while I’m waiting, because I have a lot of time to wait,” Josh adds.
