The trailblazing journalist, activist and acclaimed author published several works of influential nonfiction

Activist and author Gloria Steinem has died at 92, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

The trailblazing icon, who died on Wednesday, Sept. 2, will be remembered for her commitment to issues like women’s equality and intersectional practices. She also put many of her ideas to the page, whether as a journalist and co-founder of Ms, Magazine or as an author, bringing readers into her philosophies for years.

Steinem published a plethora of books, from memoir to biography to travel guides. Learn about her books below.

‘A Thousand Indias’

Published in 1957, Steinem’s first book was a guidebook created for the Indian government, inspired by a fellowship trip she took the previous year.

‘The Beach Book’

Another of Steinem’s earlier books, published in 1963, is dedicated to travel. In Beach Book, she advocates for the healing powers of the beach and taking time off by the shore.

‘Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions’

This 1983 title is one of Steinem’s best-known works. The essays in Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions cover various topics, like female genital mutilation and pornography, along with a satirical take on menstruation. 

“She makes what otherwise can be arduous and depressing reading into something not only relatable, but also enjoyable,” Emma Watson writes in the introduction of the third edition.
