Chicago Cubs star Alex Bregman is recovering.
The third baseman, 32, shared a look at his grisly injuries after getting hit in the face by a foul ball during the game between the Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Bregman was standing in front of the on-deck circle in the fourth inning when a foul ball tipped by teammate Michael Busch nailed him in the face. He was taken to the hospital for X-rays and a CT scan.
Before heading to the hospital, Bregman snapped a photo of himself in the locker room with a swollen left eye and cheek, which he posted on his Instagram Stories. He also had blood on his injured cheek and a tissue in his left nostril.

“Thanks for all the messages yall, I’ll be back,” he wrote.
The next day, he posted an update on his injuries with a photo that showed darker bruising on his eye.
“Back in Chicago,” he captioned the post.
PEOPLE reached out to the Cubs on Monday for an update on his condition, but didn’t immediately hear back.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell detailed Bregman’s injuries on Sunday, according to MLB, saying, “He had a cut under his eye. He was bleeding from his nose a little bit. It’s pretty swollen. It was below the eye. I honestly thought it hit him in the nose. I thought he had a broken nose, but I knew it hit him somewhere in the face.”

He added, per MLB, “It’s just an unfortunate accident. I’m hoping and praying he is all right.”
Busch, meanwhile, said the incident “just happens so fast.”
“[Pitcher Luis Mey] is throwing the ball hard and it comes off hard. Any time it enters the head area, it’s always a scary thing. We try to focus on the game, but it’s tough. Hopefully he’s OK, first and foremost.”
Bregman made his MLB debut in 2016. He previously played for the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox.
The player is a two-time World Series champion, having won in 2017 and 2022.
