The group’s first experience in the nation’s captial is one they’ll never forget

Jodeci will always have a special place in their hearts for the city that first showed them love.
While the R&B group originally hails from Charlotte, N.C., it was Washington, D.C., that first showed the group love. Speaking with PEOPLE about their upcoming 35th anniversary tour celebrating their debut album, Forever My Lady, Dalvin and K-Ci recall their “crazy” introduction to the nation’s capital.
“D.C. is when we knew. It was so crazy,” Dalvin shared. “We got on the stage and after maybe 10, 15 minutes of being on stage, they rushed the stage. We tried to get to the car, and that’s when they almost turned our van over. They took my shoes off my feet, had me up in the air.”
“They took my shoes, too,” K-Ci recalled. “It was scary, man. It was an outside show, some kind of event that Donnie Simpson and BET was having. And it took us like 40 minutes to get from the stage out to the parking lot. They were stealing stuff from inside the van that we were in and all that.”

Dalvin laughed, “I knew we either made it or we was getting robbed. One of the two.”
While the moment was a little jarring for the group, it also affirmed the passion of their fanbase.
“That’s when we found out, ‘Yo, I think we onto something, y’all. I think this is going to be big,’ ” K-Ci explained. “That was it. We give much props and thanks to Washington, D.C., because they are the ones that broke Jodeci. They did that.”

From October to December, Jodeci will hit the road to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Forever My Lady with the fans across the U.S.. The prospect is exciting for a group that feels most at home when sharing their music with their devoted fanbase.
K-Ci shared, “Being out there with the fans and performing, that’s our thing right there. Getting to see our fans and people that’s been loving us and even people that don’t even know Jodeci, just coming out, just hanging out to see what that’s all about, is a good time.”
