A Massachusetts man narrowly escaped serious injury when a pickup truck slammed into his home, killing the driver inside.
Crews responded to the scene of the crash, a single-family home on High Street in Hanson, at 6:22 p.m. local time on Monday, May 18, according to a news release from the Hanson Police Department.
Upon arrival, police said first responders found “a Chevrolet pickup truck that had rolled over onto the driver's side and crashed through a bay window in front of the home.”
Hanson Police Chief Michael Casey said the homeowner was inside his house when the crash occurred, according to ABC affiliate WCVB and Fox affiliate WFXT.
The homeowner indicated that he usually sits in the room impacted by the crash, but had opted to sit in his sunroom “because it was a nice day,” the police chief said.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 58-year-old Hanson man, “was unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle” when first responders arrived at the scene, police said.
Chris Briggs, a neighbor, said several bystanders stepped in to help before first responders arrived at the scene, according to WCVB and WFXT.
"A couple of people jumped on top and tried to go through the passenger side, all the airbags were deployed, so they tried to see if they could get him to respond at all," Briggs recalled.
Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the man, who was the only person inside the truck at the time of the crash, police said.
The man was then transported by ambulance to Brockton Hospital, where he later died. Police have not released his name, “pending notification of next-of-kin.”
Hanson police and Massachusetts State Police detectives are investigating the crash.

Police said speed was not a factor in the crash, which left a portion of High Street temporarily closed, according to WHDH.
“It's unfortunate,” Casey said. “It's one of those things that we hate to go to. Small town, we know a lot of the people, and we just want to take care of who we have in the town.”
