  • A parasite that is spread through food and drinking water has been found in Michigan
  • Several cases have been reported as health care professionals work to determine the source
  • If left untreated, Cyclospora cayetanensis can last for approximately a month before returning

A parasite found in contaminated food sources has been detected in Michigan as health care professionals urge anyone with symptoms to seek assistance immediately.

“Cyclospora cayetanensis … is commonly found in developing countries and is spread by food or water contaminated with feces,” the Monroe County Health Department said in a press release on Monday, June 29.

A “cluster” of cases has been detected within the county in the past week as officials attempt to identify a potential common exposure.

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis occur between two days and two weeks after exposure, and include frequent watery diarrhea, loss of appetite and weight, abdominal cramps and bloating, nausea and low-grade fever. Vomiting is less common, but can occur.

If untreated, cyclosporiasis can continue to cause discomfort for approximately one month before going away. However, the parasite can return.

Some who are infected may experience no symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The agency added that the parasite is typically found in tropical or subtropical regions of the world. When detected in the United States, it has been linked to various types of fresh produce.

It is not likely that the parasite can be spread through humans.

To lessen your chances of contracting the parasite, avoid consuming food or water that may be contaminated with feces, the MCHD warns.

Additional ways to protect yourself against cyclosporiasis include making sure fruits and vegetables are thoroughly washed before consumption by using clean, running water and a clean produce brush.

Damaged or bruised portions of fruits and vegetables should be cut away, or the produce should be discarded, and produce should generally be refrigerated within two hours of purchase, per MCHD.
