Owning a capsule wardrobe can take the stress out of getting ready by supplying you with mix-and-match pieces for a multitude of outfits.
Springtime is usually associated with floral patterns, but beyond whimsical prints, stylists share the “key” pieces every capsule wardrobe should have, as well as what clothes you can donate. “Anything bright, sunny, or bold instantly refreshes a spring wardrobe,” personal stylist Lisa Sher-Chambers tells PEOPLE. “A pop of color brings energy and optimism after winter neutrals and makes even simple outfits feel intentional.”
Their picks can be found at Amazon’s Presidents Day Sale from $7 — and are designed for longevity.

Prettygarden Flower Knit Short-Sleeve

Amazon
$35
Bright colors are a “key trend to invest in early,” says Sher-Chambers, as they “sell out quickly.” While neutrals like white, brown, and black are important to have in rotation, she notes that “adding color now can also make the transition out of winter feel lighter.” This short-sleeve knit can be worn alone or layered under a turtleneck for chillier days — and the pattern lets you subtly integrate florals into your outfits.
Stock Up on These Additional Sell-Out Risks
Sher-Chambers warns that well-fitting white T-shirts and platform sandals also go fast once spring hits. “Mid-season, finding the right fit and fabric becomes surprisingly difficult … The strongest pieces and most common sizes are often already gone,” she says.
- Reef Vista Higher Slides, $45 (orig. $85)
- Gayhay Slim T-Shirt, $7 (orig. $13)
Coutgo V-Cut Chunky Mules

Amazon
$48
High heels aren’t the only shoes that deliver elegance, according to Chelsea Volpe, a celebrity stylist and creative director whose clients include Sadie Sink and Julianne Nicholson. She considers mid-heel mules a “smart styling tool” because they “lengthen the leg, sharpen your posture, and deliver polish without the discomfort of a high heel,” she explains. We found this style that one shopper described as “incredibly comfortable for [their] office job.”

Risissida Double-Breasted Trench Coat

Amazon
$70
“Many people focus on dresses and tops, assuming warmth will arrive quickly, but spring dressing is really about layering,” Sher-Chambers explains. Both stylists agree that a trench coat should be in your rotation. It’s a “transitional hero and ultimate layering piece” and is “never tired” as Volpe puts it. This double-breasted style has a belt that can be adjusted for a more cinched, sophisticated look.
Siliteelon Button-Down Poplin Shirt

Amazon
$23
Another piece that’s frequently overlooked yet “incredibly impactful” in a capsule wardrobe is a “crisp” white poplin shirt, according to Sher-Chambers. “It …works across casual, professional, and elevated settings [whether] styled with denim, trousers, or skirts.” This Amazon style checks off her requirements and has wrinkle-resistant fabric.
What Stylists Say to Donate
- Both stylists say the micro trend is fading and you should focus on functional items instead (goodbye mini purses and tiny skirts).
- “Anything ill-fitting feels instantly outdated,” says Sher-Chambers. “A pre-season fit check is one of the smartest investments [you] can make.”
- Logo-heavy looks: “When branding does all the talking, the design stops speaking, leaving the look feeling loud, dated, and overly performative. True style doesn’t need to shout,” says Volpe.
Arach & Cloz Knit Tank Top

Amazon
$24
Basic tops like this style will be your best friend no matter what season it is. Volpe calls knit tanks a “layering foundation [that] go with everything,” whether you wear them under a longline vest (another one of her spring must-haves), a blazer, or alone.
Levi's Ribcage Straight Jeans

Amazon
$85
There are a few jeans that should be in your rotation, including “crisp straight and stovepipe cuts alongside refined wide-legs,” says Volpe. This Levi’s pair has a high-waist design with an elongating effect, and it comes in a dark wash, which Sher-Chambers calls a “standout investment” when tailored.

Merokeety Ribbed Maxi Dress

Amazon
$48
“A lightweight knit dress is one of the smartest pieces you can own,” says Volpe. It “anchors” a capsule wardrobe because it’s “endlessly relevant.” She explains: “Worn on its own, it feels clean and modern, [and] layered under a blazer or over trousers, it becomes directional and very now.”
Grace Karin Long Cardigan

Amazon
$43
Sher-Chambers says to skip cropped styles, as they’re “less adaptable and therefore harder to wear over time.” This longer cardigan has a blazer-inspired structure that adds a refined touch to outfits whether heading to the office or brunch with friends.
Prettygarden Satin Skirt

Amazon
$29
Slip skirts are “underrated spring wardrobe power pieces,” according to Volpe. In her words, they “add ease, elegance, and a sense of fluidity that instantly elevates even the simplest outfit. Worn with a crisp white tee, they feel effortless and modern; paired with a blazer, they strike that polished-but-relaxed balance.” She specifically likes ones that don’t stick to your body and have fluid movement.
