Class is back in session at Hillman!

The fictional HBCU is alive and bustling in the first season of the A Different World sequel series on Netflix. Showrunner Felicia Pride, alongside director and executive producer Debbie Allen, worked hard to bring the beloved 1987 series back in a way that honors the struggles college students and HBCUs are facing today, while also honoring the original series’ beloved characters that made the show a hit.

Throughout production of the new series, fans were delighted to see cast members from throughout the years returning to the Hillman campus. After binging season one, here’s everything we know about what Hillman’s favorite alumni are up to.

Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy)

Whitley Gilbert continues to demand attention in every room she walks into. A mother of three and the head of a cosmetic empire, Whitley continues her family legacy of being involved in and financially supportive of Hillman. The world believes she’s the woman who has it all. Behind the scenes, Whitley and Dwayne struggle in their marriage as they enter a phase of life where everything isn’t about their kids.

Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison)

Dwayne Wayne has also made a name for himself. The father of three steps onto Hillman as its newest provost, only to be thrust into the president’s position after a scandal shakes up the HBCU. Dwayne finds himself in a stressful positions as he struggles to save the school that introduced him to the love of his life and his best friends, all of whom he finds himself at odds with throughout the process.

Ron Johnson (Darryl M. Bell)

Ron Johnson is as smooth-talking as ever, putting on his charm as he works the world on behalf of his star football player son. Behind the scenes, Ron faces major stress making the right decisions for his boy, while also mourning the loss of his mother and struggling to connect with him over it.

Freddie Brooks (Cree Summers)

That’s Professor Brooks to you! Freddie is back at Hillman as a professor, having meaningful conversations with students and supporting them on their academic journeys. She still hasn’t figured things out in her personal life, but she’s as strong-willed in her ideological beliefs as ever, causing tension between her and Dwayne as both friends and colleagues.

Dr. Kimberly Reese Boyer (Charnele Brown)

Kimberly Reese Boyer is far from the unsure undergrad she was the first time she arrived on the Hillman campus. She returns as a successful surgeon, as well as the mother of a newly minted Hillman professor. Kim is there to support her friends as she hears about the latest twists and turns that have presented themselves to both Whitley and Freddie.

Dr. Langhorne (Debbie Allen)

Dr. Langhorne is back to share her sage advice with another Hillman class. When she holds Deborah’s hands and tells her to “relax, relate and release,” it’s almost like we’re right back in the ‘80s watching Whitley hear the same.

Byron Douglas III (Joe Morton)

Byron Douglas’ bruised ego from being left at the altar by Whitley Gilbert did eventually recover. Byron was a Hillman alum who was already out in the world, accomplished as a businessman and state senator before the others graduated. He worked his way up the political ladder to become

Lena James (Jada Pinkett Smith)

Lena James continued to take the world by storm with no apologies after graduating from Hillman. In the sequel series, she returns as a Congresswoman hoping to help Hillman through some of the crises it faces.

Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor (Dawnn Lewis)

Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor is as steady, wise and hilarious as ever before. Returning for an alumni event, she’s shocked to learn about what’s going on in her friends’ lives and provides the best advice she can as they each navigate troubled times.

President Davenport (Jenifer Lewis)

Dean Davenport later became President Davenport, who has made Hillman a much-desired destination by outfitting the school with some of its finest amenities. While her results wow alums, a revelation on her process puts

Colonel Bradford Taylor (Glynn Turman)

Colonel Bradford Taylor may have softened from his “Dr. War” days, but he’s still a no-nonsense presence when he sets foot on Hillman’s campus. He and Jaleesa are still happily married and ready to catch up with their friends as they help in the fight to save Hillman.

Charmaine Brown (Karen Malina White)

Charmaine is still chatting a mile a minute and keeping up to date on all the tea as she returns to Hillman with her trusty sidekick.

Gina Deveaux (Ajai Sanders)

Gina Deveaux is still gossiping with Charmaine and working Whitley’s nerves, but she seems at home at her alma mater.

Jaclyn (Halle Berry)

While Halle Berry doesn’t appear on screen as Jaclyn, we learn that she and Ron worked things out and had a happy life together for some time. Son Shaquille hopes to make his mom’s legacy proud while struggling with grief as he takes on a new chapter so closely connected to her memory.

The Gaines Library

Mr. Gaines gave Hillman students a home and countless nourishing meals while he helmed The Pitt. While his absence is felt in the series, his memory is also honored with the Gaines Library, newly opened as the series’ action unfolds. Lou Meyers, who played Vernon Gaines, died in 2013 at the age of 77.

Walter Oakes Stadium

While Sinbad doesn’t appear in the sequel series, Walter Oakes also has a special place on campus. Hillman’s football team’s high-energy games unfold at Walter Oakes Stadium. While there isn’t too much shared about what Walter’s been up to, Jaleesa does admit to a marital indiscretion involving him that challenged her and Brad’s marriage before they overcame it.

Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet)

Denise Huxtable only spent one year at Hillman, but she left her mark. Like Berry, Lisa Bonet doesn’t appear in the series, but Denise’s presence is felt, as she is revealed to be the mother of a central character. Not only is her son trying to win Deborah’s affections, but she’s back in contact with Dwyane, leaving us on a major cliffhanger as the season ends.
