All the Stars Who Have Spoken Out in Opposition of JK Rowling and Her Anti-Trans Views

A number of Hollywood A-listers have spoken out in opposition of famed author J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans views.

The Harry Potter author has made a number of anti-trans comments over the years, culminating in an April 2025 social media post in which she praised the U.K. Supreme Court’s ruling that womanhood is legally defined by biological sex.

(Anti-trans activists, like Rowling, considered the decision to be a win, while pro-trans advocates argue the ruling is a setback for human rights.)

In a post shared via X at the time, Rowling shared a photo of herself celebrating the decision with a drink and a cigar. “I love it when a plan comes together,” she captioned the post. In another, she wrote, “The fact that so many UK trans activists are shrieking about injustice says it all. You never had the rights you claim you’ve now lost; you had demands.”

J.K. Rowling is considered one of the most successful authors of all time for writing the fictional Harry Potter series, but her real-life opinions have stirred controversy. The author first came under fire in 2007 shortly after the series’ final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was published. Rowling revealed to fans at Carnegie […]

Rowling had previously made headlines in December 2019 when she faced major backlash after she publicly supported British researcher Maya Forstater, who was fired after she made a number of transphobic comments. The author went on to defend her stance in a lengthy anti-trans essay published in June 2020, prompting Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Eddie Redmayne and Emma Watson, among others, to speak out in defense of trans people and their rights.

“I firmly stand with the trans community,” Harry Potter star Rupert Grint said in a statement to Us Weekly at the time. “Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment.”

From the cast of Harry Potter to stars from Bridgerton and Saturday Night Live, here are all the celebrities who have criticized Rowling for her anti-trans views.

Bowen Yang

In April 2025, Yang shared a selfie via his Instagram Stories featuring the SNL star looking straight at the camera with his middle finger raised. “Absolute f*** u to jk rowling,” he wrote, alongside the transgender pride flag emoji.

Nicola Coughlan

The Bridgerton star took to social media to address how Rowling reacted to the U.K. Supreme Court’s ruling regarding trans women via her Instagram Story. “Eep your new Harry Potter lads,” she wrote, and in addition to resharing an article from The Cut titled, “This Is A New Low For J.K. Rowling.” (Coughlan was referring to Max’s upcoming Harry Potter series.) “Wouldn’t touch [the show] with a ten-foot pole.”

Taking a stand. J.K. Rowling‘s controversial transphobic remarks have left both Harry Potter‘s fans and cast members feeling conflicted. The author first came under fire in June 2020, when she shared multiple posts on Twitter that appeared to slam the trans community. “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the […]

In a second Instagram video, the actress shared that she was “completely horrified by the Supreme Court’s ruling yesterday about trans people.”

“To see an already marginalized community being further attacked and attacked in law is really stomach churning and disgusting,” she continued.

Charithra Chandran

The actress joined her Bridgerton costar in condemning Rowling for what the actress described as “loser behaviour.”

“I’ve never felt unsafe around a transwoman, ever. My womanhood has never felt threatened by a transwoman, ever,” Chandran said in a video shared via TikTok in April 2025. “How pathetic to target one of the most oppressed groups in our society. Honestly, loser behavior. And for all those people who say they care about women’s sports and women’s safety, where were you [when people were] petitioning for funding for women’s sports? Where are you petition for better legislation to persecute sexual assault against women?”
