American Girl is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a nostalgic new twist — and this time, it’s going mini.

To mark the milestone, parent company Mattel has teamed up with Polly Pocket for a special-edition collaboration that reimagines some of American Girl’s most beloved historical characters in compact, collectible form.

The American Girl x Polly Pocket set, priced at $32.40, features three book-inspired compacts representing fan-favorite characters Samantha, Kirsten and Josefina. Each compact is designed to look like a classic storybook on the outside, and opens up to reveal a detailed miniature bedroom scene that reflects each character’s world and time period.

Since its debut in 1986, American Girl has introduced generations of children to history via relatable characters, each with her own story. From Samantha’s Victorian-era upbringing to Josefina’s life in 19th-century New Mexico, each character comes with a richly developed backstory — something the Polly Pocket designs cleverly echo through their tiny, detailed interiors.

The collaboration also taps into another wave of nostalgia. Polly Pocket, known for its portable playsets and miniature figures, has seen renewed popularity in recent years, particularly among adults revisiting childhood favorites.

Beyond the design, the collaborative release reflects American Girl’s ongoing mission. According to Mattel, the anniversary celebration focuses on the brand’s legacy of telling stories that act as both “windows and mirrors,” allowing kids to see themselves — and others — through the characters’ experiences.

To round out the celebration, Mattel is also rolling out a second collaboration that leans into nostalgia in a different way. The Fisher-Price Little People Collector American Girl set, priced at $43.19, reimagines eight of the brand’s most beloved historical characters in the line’s signature rounded style. While less miniature than the Polly Pocket version, the set offers a collectible, display-friendly take on the characters, giving longtime fans yet another way to revisit the stories that defined their childhood.
