Apple has officially entered the foldable phone market with the new iPhone Duo, marking the first-ever iPhone with a folding display.
The phone can be used as a regular smartphone when closed, with a 5.4-inch screen, Apple announced on Wednesday, Sept. 9. When opened, the iPhone Duo expands into a 7.6-inch display, giving users a much larger screen for watching videos, using apps and multitasking.
“With the largest display ever on iPhone that still fits easily in your pocket, combined with the power of A20 Pro, iPhone Duo helps you stay more immersed and productive wherever you go, whether you’re enjoying content, multitasking across apps, or gaming,” Apple’s CEO John Ternus said in the announcement.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage and will be available for preorder on October 16. It will officially go on sale October 23.

Apple’s price increases with each storage option. The 512GB model costs $2,199, while the 1TB version is priced at $2,599. The 2TB model reaches $3,199, putting it among the priciest foldable phones on the market, according to Newsweek.
Apple designed the phone with a titanium frame and reinforced materials to make it more durable. It is also rated for protection against dust and water. The phone comes in two colors: Star White and Night Sky.

The Duo also features two 48-megapixel rear cameras. Apple has added several features designed specifically for the foldable design, including new ways to take photos and make FaceTime calls while using both sides of the phone.
Instead of Face ID, the phone uses Touch ID built into the side button. Apple has also placed a camera underneath the inner display, allowing the larger screen to remain mostly uninterrupted.

In comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced lower, with the 1TB model with 16GB of RAM costing around $2,500, according to Newsweek.
A month after launch, Samsung says its latest Galaxy Z models are seeing strong demand in the U.S., especially the new Fold phones, according to Samsung. The company says combined sales of the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8 are running about 30% ahead of last year’s Z Fold7, which had previously set a pre-order record.
Together, the two Fold models account for roughly 80% of current Galaxy Z series purchases, the company said.
