Bridesmaid Leaves Wedding After Bride Makes Last-Minute Request About Her Appearance

NEED TO KNOW

  • A bridesmaid was told last minute that she would need to cover her tattoos for the bride’s traditional grandparents
  • Despite the hot weather, she wore a shrug, which she took off for a minute, only to be reprimanded by the bride
  • She decided to leave the wedding after the bride told her she had made the wedding all about herself

Wedding demands have become more intense over the years, leaving some to wonder when it all becomes a bit too much.

In a since-deleted post on Reddit, a 28-year-old woman questions if she was in the wrong for leaving her friend’s wedding early over a last-minute request.

The woman shares that she has several visible tattoos, “nothing offensive or graphic, mostly floral and animal designs on [her] arms and upper back.”

“I also happen to be autistic and have had a terrible history with sensory sensitivities,” she prefaces.

Her friend, a 26-year-old bride, is getting married and asked if she would be a bridesmaid, which she excitedly agreed to.

Before the wedding, the bride sent the dress details to the bridesmaids, and the chosen gown was notably sleeveless.

However, it wasn’t until the day of the wedding that the bride sent a message to the bridesmaids, stating, “No visible tattoos, please, my grandparents are super traditional.”

The poster asked if that was negotiable, and the bride told her no, insisting it “wasn’t a big deal” and it was “just for a few hours.”

“I didn’t want to cause drama, so I just brought a shrug to wear over the dress even though it was 92°F and the ceremony was outdoors,” she writes. “I was sweating and overwhelmed and miserable the whole time.”

After the ceremony, the woman “took the shrug off for some relief,” but the bride pulled her aside and immediately told her to put it back on.

“I said, ‘It’s super hot, I’m sweating and really uncomfortable, and I’m just trying to enjoy the day,'” the poster recalls. “She got SUPER snippy and said I was making it about me.”

Feeling “unwanted and embarrassed,” the woman decided to leave early, congratulating the couple and giving them a card before “quietly” exiting before the dinner service began.

“Now she’s texting me saying I ruined the energy of her day, that people noticed I was gone, and that I could’ve ‘just sucked it up’ for a few more hours,” the woman shares.

While some of their mutual friends also claim she overreacted, people in the comments believed she made the right move, and that the bride should have been more considerate when selecting dresses for her bridesmaids.

“If you were hot and sweaty and needed to be comfortable, then that’s the bottom line. This isn’t something you spring on someone after money, time, and energy is spent,” one commenter wrote.

“If she wanted tattoo-free bridesmaids, she should’ve picked long sleeves from the start, not sprung it on you last minute like some weird purity test,” another person wrote.
