Cobie Smulders' family cabin in Canada is one she always dreamed of having.
The How I Met Your Mother alum, 43, opened the doors to the serene hideaway in British Columbia that she built from the ground up with her husband Taran Killam in a tour of the space with Architectural Digest, published on Wednesday, May 13.
Smulders and Killam — who share two daughters together and also call California home — were on the hunt for the perfect site for their home for years before they were able to start building, according to the outlet. Killam eventually found a picturesque plot of land surrounded by mountains and situated on a lake, which Smulders said “just felt like it was right” when the couple scoped it out.
The actress, who grew up in a suburb outside Vancouver, recalled always wanting a family cabin surrounded by nature, similar to the ones her friends' families vacationed in when she was younger.

She even called on one of her best friends' moms, architect Elizabeth MacKenzie, to help design her stunning property.
“I always said to myself, if I ever get lucky enough to be able to build my own home, I want her to be my architect,” Smulders told AD of MacKenzie, adding, “She was my first call.”
Today, the property serves as her family's beloved escape, with last summer being the first season she was able to enjoy the property with loved ones.
“It was heaven,” Smulders recalled. “All I think about is going back. I look at pictures of my own house and go, ‘I can't believe I live there.' That's probably why I'm inviting everyone I know to come and visit.”
The spacious property includes a dining area with a long table that can seat up to 27 people, as well as a six-bed bunk room that was perfect for the 18 friends and family members she hosted at the time, she told AD.

It also boasts an aged steel staircase that not only makes a statement in the foyer, but also highlights the space's high ceilings and extensive windows overlooking the scenic view.
Looking outside, the cabin's exterior features a raw steel roof and olive green, wood-paneled siding, according to the outlet.
