Dad of 3 Dies Days After 'Being Deliberately Hit' by Car While Cycling: ‘A Tragic Loss’

"We will remember him with love and kindness and for some truly terrible dance moves," the family of Richard Smith, 50, said in a tribute

A father of three has died after “being deliberately hit” by a car in Norwich, England, police have said.

On Tuesday, May 12, the Norfolk Constabulary confirmed in a release that cyclist Richard Smith, 50, had sadly died the day prior, on Monday, May 11, after being hit by a white Mercedes on Friday, May 8 at around 5 p.m. local time.

Police stated that the white Mercedes CLA 180 Sport car had “deliberately hit” Smith during the incident on Chartwell Road in the U.K. city, resulting in him being rushed to hospital in critical condition with serious head injuries. He died three days later.

David Morgan, 40, of George Winter Court, who appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court on Monday, has been charged with attempted murder and driving with excess alcohol, per the release. He's been remanded to appear at Norwich Crown Court on June 8.

Police will now consult with the U.K.'s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on the charge, the release stated. Authorities have also urged anybody who might have any dashcam footage or information relating to the crash to get in touch.

The family of Smith paid tribute to him in an emotional message, which was shared by the Norfolk Constabulary.

“A much loved partner, dad, brother, son, friend and colleague has sadly died after an incident on Friday May 8th 2026,” the statement read. “We are all struggling to make sense of such a tragic loss to all of our lives. Rich was a keen [Norwich City F.C.] NCFC supporter, a blood and organ donor and a proud dad to his three children. We will remember him with love and kindness and for some truly terrible dance moves.” 

Smith worked as a U.K. sales manager for Delta Fire, according to local outlet the Norwich Evening News. The company supplies fire protection equipment.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that our much loved colleague, Richard Smith, passed away yesterday following a road traffic incident,” the company wrote on its LinkedIn page on Tuesday.

They added, “Richard was a valued member of our team and will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of working with him.”

“Our thoughts are with Richard's family, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. We are supporting our staff as they come to terms with this loss. Thank you for your continued support and kindness,” the company's tribute concluded.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service wrote in the comments section, “Our team is so sorry to read this, our thoughts are with Richard's family, friends and all of his work family at Delta Fire.”
