Este Haim and Monica Barbaro grew close on the set of their new rom-com.
“Me and Monica definitely bonded over feeling like we were kids that wandered onto a movie set,” Haim, 40, tells PEOPLE at the premiere of One Night Only in New York City on Monday, Aug. 3. “I think we were both just like, ‘How did we get here?’ But we’re glad that we did. Monica’s the best. We have the same sense of humor. I love her so much. We have the best time.”
One Night Only features Barbaro, 36, as a “hopeful romantic” named Allie, who happens to bump into Owen, played by Callum Turner, “in an ever-so-slightly fictionalized New York City on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have sex,” as an official synopsis for the movie reads. Haim appears in the movie for a supporting performance and also composed One Night Only‘s music alongside musician Christopher Stracey (Anyone But You).
“Callum’s just funny too,” Haim says of the movie’s male lead, “I kept trying to get him to break character on set and he wouldn’t do it. That was my one goal, and I haven’t achieved it. I never achieved it.”

One Night Only also stars Maya Hawke, Ziwe, Ben Marshall, Molly Ringwald, King Princess, Julia Fox and LeVar Burton. The movie sees Barbaro’s Allie and Turner’s Owen “feel a spark when they meet, but a series of missteps and side quests complicate their night, keeping them apart,” per the synopsis. “As they each race toward and away from each other across the city, they just might discover that the one thing they want most is closer than they think.”
For Haim, who married tech entrepreneur Jonathan Levin on New Year’s Eve in 2025, she says working on One Night Only reinforced her belief that couples should continue working at their relationship. “You should always keep pursuing, even if you’re in a relationship,” she says. “I think that you should always be dating. You should always be working towards having a better relationship. Relationships are work, and I think people forget about that. But yeah, and I think if you’re single, go have fun. Go have a good time.”

Haim made her acting debut in a 2019 episode of the series Dollface. In 2021, she appeared in Licorice Pizza, and she also held a role in the 2024 movie Shell. She also contributed music to the Netflix rom-com Voicemails for Isabelle earlier this year and collaborated with Stracey on the score for Anyone But You.
One Night Only is in theaters Aug. 7.
