When he’s on set, nothing can distract Callum Turner from his method work.
Este Haim, the co-composer for the new rom-com One Night Only, told PEOPLE at the film’s world premiere in N.Y.C. on Aug. 3 that she would try to mess with Turner, 36, while shooting the project — but it never worked out how she wanted.
“Callum’s just funny,” Haim, 40, said. “I kept trying to get him to break character on set, and he wouldn’t do it. That was, like, my one goal, and I never achieved it.”
One Night Only follows a man and woman who live in an alternate United States, where premarital sex is illegal except for a single 12-hour window every year.
Turner stars opposite Monica Barbaro in the lead roles. Haim, meanwhile, plays a bouncer named Aura in the Will Gluck-directed film.

During an Aug. 2 conversation alongside costar Barbaro, 36, and director Gluck, 47, Turner spoke about the routines he follows when creating a character.
Despite being a British actor, he said he has taken on many roles that require an American accent. “Of the last ten jobs that I’ve done, nine of them I’m American, so I’m getting used to it,” the actor explained.
Further revealing that he prefers to stay in character at all times on set, Turner told the audience at the event that he keeps the American accent up, even when cameras aren’t rolling.
“I worked with a woman called Brett Tyne, who I met on Masters of the Air,” he said. “I remember I walked into the office and I said, ‘Well, this is how I like to do it. I like to stay in the accent the whole time, so can you help me get there?’ And she was like, ‘You’re never going to be able to do it.’ And I said, ‘You want to bet?’ “
“Well, it’s just a lot easier for me actually, because if I was flipping between myself and then this character, which you do, but then the accent is just an added layer that I want to remove. And it helps me a lot. But it’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of prep work and a lot of concentration,” Turner continued.
At the film’s Manhattan premiere, Haim told PEOPLE that Barbaro and Turner brought “their chemistry” to their characters.
“Yeah. Made our job so easy,” the musician’s co-composer, Christopher Stracey, chimed in to add.
One Night Only — also starring Maya Hawke and Molly Ringwald, among others — is in theaters now.
