If you’re attending a summer wedding, you'd better think twice before wearing these things.
Ahead of upcoming nuptials, I turned to celebrity event planner Mindy Weiss to get all the (I) dos and don’ts of wedding guest attire. Her qualifications? She’s helped plan many star-studded weddings with clients like Justin and Hailey Bieber, Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, Josh Allen and Hailee Steinfeld. She’s also had a hand in some of the Kardashians’ most epic parties. TL;DR: Weiss is the top source for this information.
“Before choosing your look, think about what you’ll be doing most of [the] night. If that’s dancing, you want something comfortable,” Weiss tells PEOPLE. “You don’t want to be pulling up your strapless dress all night or fixing your fashion. Be comfortable so you can be present in the moment.”
Zzv Wrap Ruffle Wedding Guest Dress

$57 at Amazon
“These days, a long dress is good for any dress code,” reveals Weiss. That said, midi options are still safe as long as they’re not “too short” — and this $57 dress that we found meets those criteria.
Case in point: It has a small slit that shows off your figure without showing too much skin. (It will also keep you cool during outdoor weddings!) It also has a V-neck design that even flattered one shopper’s 34F chest size, as well as a fluid fabric that won’t cling to your stomach like satin or silk.
What NOT to Wear
“When it comes to colors, don’t wear white. Don’t wear anything in the white family – creams, ivory, anything that may feel like it’s white, a bride can easily take issue with that.” — Mindy Weiss.
Bonus: If you want to take it a step further, I, a gal who has been in and attended multiple weddings, also try to avoid light pinks and pastels because they can look white in photos.
Baoqiya Shawl Pashmina

$16 $11 at Amazon
What about when the sun goes down? “In warmer months, it's nice to have a pretty cardigan or pashmina wrap in case of a chill.” This one with over 3,400 perfect ratings has a sheer fabric that won’t hide your dress entirely and could be worn to rehearsal dinners, cocktail hours, and more. (I just wore something similar to a black-tie gala!)
LovyoCoCo Clutch Purse, $23 with Prime

$24 $23 at Amazon
Your purse should not only fit your lip gloss and tissues, but your phone, too. “Leaving a cell phone on the table while dancing is never a good idea,” says Weiss. Luckily, this clutch that’s very Bottega Veneta-esque has plenty of room. It also comes with a strap that you can use at the end of the night when you’re too tired to function.
Idifu Block-Heel Pumps

$38 $33 at Amazon
I know your feet may be hurting, but even Weiss notes that “wearing sneakers is off the table at any wedding until the after-party.” For the ceremony, consider this pair, which has a thicker block heel that won’t get stuck in the grass or wobble on cobblestones. The thicker the heel, the more comfortable, too — take it from me, my biggest regret from my sister’s wedding was wearing stilettos.
