Kevin Keegan, the former England captain, has announced his stage 4 cancer diagnosis.

During an onstage appearance over the weekend, Keegan, 75, said the disease spread to other parts of his body. The soccer legend's family and Newcastle United announced he was diagnosed with cancer on Jan. 7, 2026, and that he would be undergoing treatment.

"I was in a car accident and, through that, I had to have an operation," Keegan, who also managed multiple U.K. teams between 1992 and 2008, said at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House, according to the BBC. "Whilst having the scan for the operation, they found out I had cancer. They said they had an absolute top doctor for fighting what you have got, which is stage four cancer."

The doctor was a "Liverpool supporter, so I knew I wouldn't walk alone," Keegan said, referring to Liverpool FC's anthem, "You'll Never Walk Alone."

The doctor told him, "Kevin, this new treatment, I've got a tremendous strike rate," Keegan recalled.

"I said, 'What's your strike rate?' He said, '33%'. I thought it would be 80%, 90%. 33%! I'm still here at the moment," Keegan said.

Keegan was "recently admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms," his family said in January.

"These investigations have revealed a diagnosis of cancer, for which Kevin will undergo treatment," said the statement. "Kevin is grateful to the medical team for their intervention and ongoing care. During this difficult time, the family are requesting privacy, and will be making no further comment."

Newcastle United, the team Keegan managed throughout the 1990s and played for from 1982 to 1984, sent its "heartfelt support and warmest wishes" to Keegan following his latest health update.

"Kevin holds a unique and cherished place in the history of Newcastle United, and in the hearts of our supporters," the team said on Instagram. "His passion, leadership and connection to the club and city have shaped some of our most memorable moments.

"Everyone at the club is behind Kevin and sends strength and best wishes to him and his family for the journey ahead," the team continued. "Kevin will always be warmly welcomed at St. James' Park and we hope to see him again soon. 🖤🤍"

Manchester City offered similar sentiments in its own statement,

"We are all thinking of you and we will never forget what you did for this club during your four years here. 🩵," Manchester City, which Keegan managed from 2001 to 2005, wrote.
