FDA Issues Update on White Rice Recalled in 13 States Due to Potential Contamination with Foreign Materials

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an update on a white rice recall first announced in April.

Lundberg Family Farms recalled more than 27,000 packages of its White Jasmine Rice over concerns that the product may be contaminated with foreign materials, according to a recent recall notice from the FDA. The product is sold in 2-lb. bags.

The Universal Product Code (UPC) on the affected product is 073416-040281. The affected lot codes are 260201MA with a best-by date of Feb. 1, 2027, and 260202MA with a best-by date of Feb. 2, 2027.

The update noted that the rice was distributed in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

The product is sold in chains such as Wegmans, Walmart, Target, Whole Foods and Giant.

The FDA classified the recall as Class II, which involves a product that “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” or for which the likelihood of serious health consequences is remote, per the agency’s website.

Lundberg Family Farms did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

A voluntary recall of the same product and lot codes was first announced by Wegmans on April 4, though the specific states affected were not disclosed at the time.

At the time, Lundberg Family Farms said no injuries had been reported in connection with the potential contamination following Wegmans’ initial announcement, per USA Today.
