After nearly three years in development, the dragon riders are officially taking flight.
During Amazon MGM Studios' upfront presentation at New York City's Beacon Theatre on Monday, May 11, Prime Video announced that a series adaptation of Fourth Wing has officially been ordered to series.
The highly anticipated adaptation of Rebecca Yarros' bestselling romantasy novel will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
While unveiling the project onstage, executive producer and showrunner Meredith Averill teased that the series will fully embrace the emotional intensity and fandom obsession that helped turn Fourth Wing into a global phenomenon. Averill's previous credits include Jane the Virgin, The Good Wife, The Haunting of Hill House and Locke & Key.

“Rebecca's books have become one of the fastest-selling franchises of the 21st century, with a fandom so passionate, so devoted, they don't just read these books, they live in them,” Averill said. “And it's because Fourth Wing is everything at once.”
“The emotional stakes are sky high, the battles are epic, power dynamics are thrilling, and underneath it is so much humor and heart and a romance that will consume you,” she continued.
Executive producer Michael B. Jordan also emphasized the importance of finding the right creative team for the adaptation before bringing out Lisa Joy, who will direct the pilot episode.
“This project required the right creative partner,” Jordan said.
Joy, who directed episodes of Westworld and Fallout, then assured fans the team is committed to delivering a faithful and cinematic version of the beloved novels.
“We're building a cinematic world,” she said, adding that the goal is “to deliver the series this fandom deserves.”
Yarros, who serves as an executive producer on the series, also praised the creative team behind the adaptation.
“These are the people who understand what a story means to its readers, and they're passionate about the book, which is why I trust them completely,” the author said in a statement.
Based on Yarros' blockbuster 2023 novel, Fourth Wing follows Violet Sorrengail, a young woman forced by her mother to enter the brutal Basgiath War College, where candidates compete to become elite dragon riders. Fourth Wing is the first book in the Empyrean series, which also includes the novels Iron Flame and Onyx Storm.
The adaptation has become one of the most anticipated fantasy projects currently in development, with Jordan previously teasing that the casting process would include a mix of newcomers and established stars.

“When it's done the right way, I think you can have a nice balance where casting won't be distracting,” Jordan told the BBC in February 2026, promising fans there would be “no obvious choices.”
“So just know, it's nothing cheesy coming out,” he added. “I think it's going to be something that feels honest.”
Earlier this year, Jordan also told Deadline that the creative team understands just how much the fanbase cares about the franchise.
“We are making sure that this is going to be an exciting show that delivers on all of the things the fans want and some of the things that they won't be expecting either,” he said in January.
Yarros has also shared her excitement over the adaptation process, previously revealing that she “kicked” her feet while reading early versions of the scripts.
“I was super scared to read it,” she admitted in a 2025 TikTok clip. “But I love it.”
She additionally praised the writers for capturing “the energy and spirit of the book.”
