A 2-year-old girl was attacked by a dog and rushed to the hospital with a potentially life-threatening neck injury.

Emergency services were called to a home in the Scenic Rim region of Queensland, Australia, on Thursday, May 7, at about 5:15 p.m. local time, a spokesperson from the Queensland Police said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

The child sustained “multiple serious injuries” and was taken to the Queensland Children's Hospital, where she remains in critical condition, per police.

“Police will be assisting Scenic Rim Council Officers in relation to the matter,” they added.

The child sustained a particularly serious bite to the neck, per 9 News, News.com.au and the Daily Mail.

A Scenic Rim Council spokesperson confirmed they were aware of the incident in a statement to News.com.au.

The spokesperson added that the dog involved was a Bull Arab-type dog, which is a large Australian breed originally bred for hunting.

The dog is now deceased, per the outlet, citing the Scenic Rim Council spokesperson.

The Council completed its investigation of the incident with police and said that no further action will be taken at this time, per News.com.au.
