NEED TO KNOW

  • Honda is recalling nearly 99,000 vehicles after discovering a defect in the front passenger seat weight sensor that could affect airbag deployment during a crash
  • The recall affects certain Acura and Honda vehicles from model years 2016 through 2026
  • Dealers will replace the sensor free of charge, per a recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Honda is recalling nearly 99,000 vehicles in the United States due to a defect that could affect airbag performance during a crash.

According to a recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on May 21, the front passenger seat weight sensor in certain Honda and Acura vehicles may crack and short-circuit.

The sensor is designed to detect the size and weight of the person sitting in the front passenger seat and helps determine whether the airbag should deploy. If the sensor malfunctions, it could potentially incorrectly identify a child as an adult, and allow the airbag to unsafely deploy during a crash.

Honda did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on the recent recall.

The recall affects certain Acura TLX, RDX and MDX vehicles, as well as several Honda models, including the Accord, Accord Hybrid, Civic, CR-V, CR-V Hybrid, Fit, HR-V, Insight, Odyssey, Passport, Pilot and Ridgeline.

Model years vary by vehicle and range from 2016 through 2026. No injuries or crashes related to the defect were noted in the recall notice.

To find out whether a specific model is affected, vehicle owners can enter their vehicle identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA website here.

To remedy the issue, dealers will replace the front passenger seat weight sensor free of charge, per the recall notice.

Owner notification letters regarding the recall are expected to be mailed beginning July 6, 2026.
