There is no indication that human remains found in a desert area in Arizona are connected to the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie‘s 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie.
On the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 17, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) responded to reports of human remains found in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard, the department said on X.
The location is approximately 15 miles from Nancy’s home, according to CNN.
The sheriff’s department said the remains appear to have been at the location for “an extended period of time.”

“At this time, there is no indication they are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation,” the statement continued. “Additional information will be released as it becomes available.”
“Outside of what we posted on social media, we do not have any additional information to provide at this time,” PSCD told PEOPLE.
The update comes nearly three weeks after the sheriff’s department confirmed to PEOPLE that hair recovered from Nancy’s home has not led them to identify a suspect.
Authorities also released the full text of two ransom notes sent after Nancy was last seen Jan. 31 and reported missing on Feb. 1.
“We just saw what was being said, and we felt like we needed to put something out that’s really accurate, and this was the time,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a video posted on X.
“Investigators felt like there’s a number of pieces of information in these notes that it just might jog someone to say, ‘I’ve heard that,’ or [recognize] the wording, the style of the writing,” he added. “It might jog somebody to think about who would’ve written this, how was this done?”

“My investigators, we look at it, and clearly there’s things in there that are very concerning to our investigative team,” said Nanos. “So we hope that by releasing the actual note we’ll get some response from the community.”
Savannah’s latest plea for the safe return of her mom came in a lengthy Instagram post on Aug. 1, in which she said she and her family “have lived every moment, every breath, and every heartbeat in agony and despair ever since” her disappearance.
