Inside “The Jeffersons” Cast’s Lives 41 Years After the Show Was Canceled

The beloved sitcom ended its run on July 2, 1985, after 11 seasons

The Jeffersons moved on up and off the airwaves 41 years ago.

The classic sitcom premiered on CBS on Jan. 18, 1975. It centered on George and Louise “Weezy” Jefferson — the characters first played by Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford, respectively, on the trailblazing ‘70s show All in the Family — and the fictional married couple’s friends and family.

The Jeffersons ran for 11 seasons, airing over 250 episodes. By its last episode on July 2, 1985, it had become one of the most successful spinoffs in television history.

Even after the series concluded its run — without a proper series finale, as the network canceled it — the cast remained staples on TV and in movies. In fact, one ensemble member, Marla Gibbs, is still working in her 90s.

“People are still watching it, because they connect with it,” Gibbs told the Television Academy in April 2025 of the sitcom’s legacy. “[It presented issues] they never had an opportunity to think about. But now they can not only think about it, they can laugh about it.”

So, where is The Jeffersons cast now? Here’s everything to know about what the stars did after the show ended 41 years ago.

Isabel Sanford as Louise “Weezy” Jefferson

Sanford, who started her acting career in theater, played Louise “Weezy” Jefferson, George’s loving and witty wife, on all 11 seasons of The Jeffersons.

“I did Louise patterned after me, like how I was with my husband,” she told the Television Academy in 2002.

The New York City native made TV history in 1981 as the first Black actress to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

In addition to her seven Emmy nods, she received five Golden Globe nominations and two NAACP Image Awards.

Following the end of The Jeffersons, Sanford appeared on several other sitcoms, including Living Single, The Steve Harvey Show and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. She also reprised her role of Louise on two episodes of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and starred in Jenifer Lewis’ 1999 musical film Jackie’s Back!

Sanford received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame just six months before her death at age 86 on July 9, 2004, per The New York Times.

“We all respected Isabel,” Ernest Harden Jr., who played Marcus Henderson on The Jeffersons, told PEOPLE in February 2024. “She was the consummate artist. Before every show, they would introduce her and the cast would all bow. She was the queen of the show.”

Sanford shared three children with William E. Richmond.

Sherman Hemsley as George Jefferson

Hemsley earned an Emmy and a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of the loud and stubborn George Jefferson.

After The Jeffersons ended, he led another successful sitcom, Amen, which ran for five seasons from 1986 to 1991.

The Philadelphia native continued to appear on sitcoms after that, including Designing Women, Family Matters, Martin, Goode Behavior, Sister, Sister, The Hughleys and Clunkers. He also voiced B.P. Richfield, the evil Triceratops boss on Dinosaurs.

Though he retired from acting, Hemsley and his on-screen wife Sanford reprised their Jeffersons roles multiple times over the years. In addition to appearing on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, they starred in commercials for Denny’s and Old Navy. The two even won a TV Land Award for “Favorite Cantankerous Couple” in 2004.

Hemsley was also a professional musician. He released a single, “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,” in 1989, followed by the 1992 R&B album Dance.

Hemsley died at home in El Paso, Texas, on July 24, 2012. He was 74.

“Really, he was great to work with, man,” actor Garrett Morris, who appeared on five episodes of The Jeffersons, told PEOPLE in February 2026. “Every Wednesday he would feed the whole cast.”

Roxie Roker as Helen Willis

Roxie Roker portrayed Helen Willis on The Jeffersons, making history as one of TV’s first interracial couples.

After the long-running sitcom ended, she continued to work in television, appearing on shows such as 227, Punky Brewster, Murder, She Wrote, and A Different World.

The Brooklyn-raised actress died from breast cancer on Dec. 2, 1995, per the Tampa Bay Times. She was 66.

Roker and her late ex-husband, Sy Kravitz — a former NBC producer who died on Oct. 29, 2005, at 80 — were the parents of music icon Lenny Kravitz. (Roker and Sy divorced in 1985, the same year the show ended.)

Lenny told PEOPLE in February 2024 that he watches The Jeffersons when he misses his mom.

“She’s still everything to me. I probably feel her more since she’s left the planet,” he said. “I’m very fortunate that she was on television because when I need to, I’ll turn on The Jeffersons and watch her, and it does so much for me. I am so grateful that God chose her to be my mother.”

Franklin Cover as Tom Willis

Franklin Cover started his career as a stage actor and made multiple guest appearances on the small screen before landing the role of Helen’s husband Tom Willis on The Jeffersons.

After the show ended, the Ohio native appeared on series such as 227, Who’s the Boss?, ER, Mad About You, Living Single and Will & Grace; the latter marked his last credited on-screen appearance in 1999. He also appeared in 1987’s Wall Street.

According to The New York Times, the actor died from pneumonia on Feb. 5, 2006, at 77.

Cover was married to wife Mary Bradford Stone, with whom he welcomed two children, from January 1965 until his death.

Zara Cully as Olivia “Mother” Jefferson

By the time she played “Mother” Jefferson, Zara Cully already had a long list of stage and screen credits, but her scene-stealing role as George’s intense, loving mother on The Jeffersons shot her to stardom.

Per The New York Times, while filming season 4 of the show, Cully died on Feb. 28, 1978, at age 86. Her role was not recast.

When asked about his on-screen mom during a Television Academy interview in August 2003, Hemsley said, “She was so beautiful. She had been around for so long, vaudeville; she had done all kinds of stuff since she was a little girl. It was her first successful, big thing after all those years.”

“She said, ‘I’m so happy. I finally got to do this and work with you people,’ ” Hemsley added.

The Massachusetts native was married to James Brown Sr. from 1914 until his death in 1968. The couple had four children: sons Emerson and James Jr. and daughters Diane and Zara Gayle.

Berlinda Tolbert as Jenny Willis Jefferson

Berlinda Tolbert portrayed Helen and Tom Willis’ daughter Jenny Willis Jefferson.

After The Jeffersons ended, Tolbert guest-starred on various TV shows, including 7th Heaven, Home Improvement, Six Feet Under and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

She also had roles in classic films like Harlem Nights (1989), Goodfellas (1990) and Patriot Games (1992).

Her last acting credit in a feature film was in 2011’s Last Ride in the Midwest Pacific. In the 2020s, Tolbert made headlines after helping preserve a beloved elementary school in her hometown of Charlotte, N.C., per The Charlotte Post.

Tolbert has been married to husband Bob Reid since 1979.

Mike Evans as Lionel Jefferson

Mike Evans was the first of two actors to portray Lionel Jefferson, George and Weezy’s only child, who later marries Jenny. Mike originated the role but left after the first season. He later returned to play Lionel from 1979 to 1981.

After his initial departure, the North Carolina-born actor created and wrote for the Lear-developed sitcom Good Times, which aired on CBS from 1974 to 1979.

Mike also appeared on Love, American Style and The Streets of San Francisco and starred in the 1976 miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man.

His family told The New York Times that in his later years, he invested in Southern California real estate. The newspaper reported his last credited on-screen role was a 2000 episode of Walker, Texas Ranger.

Mike died of throat cancer at his mother’s home in Twentynine Palms, Calif., on Dec. 14, 2006. He was 57.

Damon Evans as Lionel Jefferson

Damon Evans (no relation to Mike) took on the role of Lionel Jefferson after Mike left, portraying the character for three seasons.

“I had initially auditioned for the role of JJ in another Norman Lear show, Good Times, so when I was called to Los Angeles to audition for The Jeffersons, Norman remembered me and liked me from earlier, and I got the part without the required screen test,” Damon told his alma mater, Brooklyn College, in June 2024.

After The Jeffersons, the Baltimore-born actor appeared in the 1979 miniseries The Roots: The Next Generations, and the films Turk 182 (1985) and Going the Distance (2000).

Now based in N.Y.C., Damon’s true calling was classical music, which became his main career focus.

Among his many stage productions was his Lincoln Center debut in Phillip Glass’ opera Akhnaten in 1985, and he has been a soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra, among others.

Marla Gibbs as Florence Johnston

Gibbs’ breakout role came as the no-nonsense family maid Florence Johnston, for which she received five Emmy nominations.

The prolific actress told the Television Academy in April 2025 that she used to stick around after table reads, even as the other actors left.

“I wanted to know what the [producers and directors] were going to talk about; I didn’t care what the actors were going to talk about,” she explained. “I just wanted [my lines] to be real and authentic. I didn’t think like most actors because [back then] I was not a professional actor. But thanks to The Jeffersons, I became a professional actor.”

Gibbs has worked consistently since The Jeffersons concluded. She led the cast of 227, which aired on NBC from 1985 to 1990, and later starred on shows like The Hughleys, Passions, The First Family and Days of Our Lives.

Gibbs has also had dozens of guest-starring roles, popping up on everything from A Different World, Martin and Dawson’s Creek in the ‘90s to ER, Cold Case and Lincoln Heights in the aughts to This Is Us, Black-Ish and NCIS in the 2010s.

Though she’s best known for her TV roles, she’s also acted in the films The Meteor Man (1993), Madea’s Witness Protection (2012), Grantham & Rose (2014) and El Camino (2019).

Throughout the 2020s, Gibbs reunited with The Jeffersons creator Lear on a season 4 episode of Netflix’s One Day at a Time, had recurring roles on History of the World: Part II and Grey’s Anatomy and appeared on Will Trent in 2025 and The Upshaws and Chicago Med in 2026.

Gibbs, the oldest-living original cast member of The Jeffersons, released a memoir, It’s Never Too Late, in February 2026.

She shares three children with ex-husband Jordan Gibbs: daughter Angela and sons Dorian and Joseph.

Paul Benedict as Harry Bentley

Paul Benedict played Harry Bentley, the Jeffersons’ British neighbor.

Following the sitcom’s end, the New Mexico-born actor appeared in the films Arthur 2: On the Rocks (1988), Cocktail (1988) and The Addams Family (1991). He also collaborated with Christopher Guest’s comedy troupe, appearing in Waiting for Guffman (1996) and A Mighty Wind (2003).

He directed off-Broadway plays and appeared in numerous stage productions both before and after his time on The Jeffersons.

Benedict died on Dec. 2, 2008, per MacDonald Rockwell & MacDonald funeral home. He was 70.
