Celebrities like Joanna Gaines and Meghan Markle have been spotted playing mahjong this year, but they’re not the only ones enthralled by the iconic tile game. In fact, it’s currently sweeping the country, taking over social clubs, family game nights, and even corporate wellness retreats.
To understand why American mahjong is so popular (and frankly, how I can start playing it), I tapped Certified Mahjong Instructor Tracy Budnik for her perspective. Budnik explains that the game isn’t just “having a moment,” but rather becoming a part of “a broader cultural shift toward intentional living, analog experiences, and authentic human connection.”

What’s the Difference Between American Mahjong and Chinese Mahjong?
My first exposure to mahjong was watching the high-stakes game scene between Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh) in Crazy Rich Asians. Budnik clarified that the characters were actually playing Chinese mahjong — a completely different game.
American mahjong follows rules set by the National Mah Jongg League, which introduces new hand combinations every year. Budnik, who showed me her bedazzled 2026 card, says that this year’s card has “55 lines with 1,077 possible winning combinations, making every game a fresh puzzle and ensuring no two games are ever the same.”
Chinese mahjong, on the other hand, doesn’t use NMJL’s standardized cards. Instead, Budnik says its “scoring systems, winning hands, and rules vary depending on the region and style being played.”
While some people may feel that American mahjong is more complicated to learn than Chinese mahjong, Budnik contends it’s approachable: “Once you understand the basic flow of the game, everything else builds naturally through repetition.” Budnik, who teaches beginner-friendly game sessions, says novice players often learn best through guided practice or online play.
