John Mulaney is getting real about what it’s like raising a toddler.
During his Netflix show Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney, the comedian, 42, poked fun at what it’s like raising a toddler. Mulaney, who’s a proud dad of two, compared the experience to working on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, almost five years after the show ended following toxic workplace allegations made against host Ellen DeGeneres.
“You know what having a 3-year-old is like?” he asked viewers. “Having a 3-year-old is what I imagine working on Ellen [DeGeneres’] show was like. Because people come over and they’re like, ‘How is it?’ And you’re, like, ‘Oh, it’s fine. You know, we have fun. There’s games.’”
“We have dancing, you know. So if he starts dancing, you dance. But if he stops dancing,” he continued, changing to a more serious tone before saying, “You f—— stop dancing right away.’”

Mulaney and his wife, actress Olivia Munn, share two children. The couple, who were first spotted together in June 2021, welcomed their son Malcolm Hiệp, 3, in November 2021. In July 2024, they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at a friend’s house in New York, with Sam Waterston marrying the pair and just Malcolm and one other witness in attendance. Two months later, the couple welcomed their second child together, daughter Méi June, 7 months.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in March, Mulaney was asked about his two kids. As he and Jimmy Kimmel, 57, talked about his daughter, the late-night host asked him if he named his daughter after two back-to-back months to be funny.
“No, I’m a professional comedian, so if I was going for funny it might be a harder laugh than May next to June,” Mulaney joked. “Olivia’s mom’s name is Jung, so we were doing an Americanized tribute to her by naming her June.”
“Originally, our daughter was going to be named June for a while. And then suddenly I went June Mulaney sounds like John Mulaney said weird, so we said how about Méi — which means plum in Chinese — and so she’s Méi June,” he explained.

In March 2024, Munn announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer a year prior. The following month, she opened up to PEOPLE about how the scary news affected her parenting and relationship with her husband.
“It would’ve felt like climbing an iceberg without him,” said Munn, who endured four surgeries over 10 months.
She called Mulaney a huge support and “an incredibly hands-on father,” recalling how he would go “to and from the hospital—taking Malcolm to the park, putting him to nap, driving to Cedars-Sinai, hanging out with me, going home, putting Malcolm to bed, coming back to me and he did it all happily.”
