JoJo is making the best of her 2026 MTV VMAs wardrobe mishap.
Speaking with PEOPLE on the red carpet ahead of the ceremony, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque, 35, revealed that she hadn’t originally planned on wearing a black bra and embellished black skirt.
“It was supposed to be a different outfit,” Levesque shares. “However … the other outfit literally broke and disintegrated, so I was like, ‘Oops!’ Five minutes before we get in the car, we’re like, ‘Okay, let’s pull out the other one that we love.’”
The singer continues, “Honestly, it reminds me of like, menswear … like Aaliyah if I had the choker. It’s like tuxedo, playing on some different things. Thankfully I love it, so it’s not a compromise.”

“I feel a little busty, but that’s alright!” Levesque adds. “It’s what I got.”
At this year’s VMAs, Madonna — who’s won 19 Moon Persons in the past — leads with 11 nominations.
Taylor Swift, who’s earned 30 Moon Persons, follows closely behind with nine nominations, while Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have seven nominations each.

Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson earned five nominations, while LISA earned four, and Shakira and Tate McRae earned three.
First-time nominees include GENER8ION, Yung Lean, CORTIS, Stella Lefty, Don Toliver, Kali Uchis, Noah Kahan, Olivia Dean, Sienna Spiro and Tucker Wetmore.
Madonna, 68, is set to open the 2026 VMAs with her first live performance at the show in 23 years.
The Queen of Pop’s last appearance as a live performer at the VMAs came in 2003, when she opened the show alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott. The performance featured a medley of “Hollywood,” “Like a Virgin,” and “Passenger,” as well as Madonna’s now-famous onstage kisses with Spears, 44, and Aguilera, 45.
Hosted by Snoop Dogg, the 2026 VMAs are airing live from Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET (4:30 to 6:30 p.m. PT) on CBS, with a simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. The show will be available globally on Paramount+ and MTV the following day.
