As a fashion writer, I often look to celebrities for shopping inspiration at the start of a new season. This spring, two shoe styles are on my radar: Mary Janes and mesh flats.
Katie Holmes proved Mary Janes are still as cool as ever, styling hers with wide-leg jeans and a simple white blouse. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie leaned into the mesh flat trend, stepping out in a sheer pair with a Mary Jane-style buckle, paired with an understated all-black airport outfit.
Inspired by their looks, I tried the DV by Dolce Vita Mulaney Flat from DSW — and now I hardly want to take them off. Even better, DSW is currently offering a buy-one, get-one 50 percent off sale through May 3, making it a great time to stock up on shoes for spring and summer. No code is required.

While Robbie and Holmes make the shoes look effortlessly cool, I was skeptical about how a combination of the two styles would work on me. Mary Janes remind me of my elementary school days, when looking fashion-forward wasn’t exactly a priority. Pairing that look with mesh felt like a risk, but it’s one I’m glad I took. The DSW pair is a subtle entry point into the trend, bringing a fresh texture to my outfits with minimal effort. They go with virtually anything, including jeans, skirts, and dresses.
I wore them straight out of the box to dinner with friends and was shocked by how comfortable they felt. I love flats, but I’m used to a break-in period that sometimes comes with blisters or small cuts. This pair, however, felt broken-in from the first step, thanks to the cushioned footbed. They’re soft underfoot, too, almost like a pair of cozy slippers.
The crocheted exterior subtly reveals the shape of my foot without being completely see-through, making these practical for everyday wear. And they’ve been a hit: I get compliments every time I wear them — including from my cashier at Trader Joe’s and my friend’s four-year-old daughter, who told me they are “very pretty.”
Other shoppers find the shoes easy to wear, too. One person who wore them for 10 hours during a conference said they are “the most comfortable flats” they’ve ever worn, noting that they have good support and don’t dig in. Another fan said the pair “fits like a glove and is not tight,” which I experienced too, as my usual size 9 fit me well.
