NEED TO KNOW

  • Lauren Sánchez Bezos praised Sydney Sweeney’s performance in Christy in an Instagram Stories post on Wednesday, Nov. 12
  • The children’s book author said the actress’ performance was “Oscar worthy”
  • The two have publicly displayed their friendship, attending each other’s events in the past

Lauren Sánchez Bezos is standing in Sydney Sweeney’s corner.

Although Christy received positive reviews from many critics — and a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival — the sports drama based on the life of boxer Christy Martin, 57, played by Sweeney, 28, opened to just $1.3 million at the box office.

Two days after Sweeney reacted to the film’s debut with a lengthy Instagram post expressing that she was “proud” of the film regardless of its box office numbers, Sánchez Bezos, 55, publicly voiced her support for the film.

In an Instagram Stories post on Wednesday, Nov. 12, Sánchez Bezos shared a photo of the film on a screen, writing, “Just watched @sydney_sweeney in @christy.movie. I have to say it’s one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen. Oscar worthy performance by Sydney.”

Sánchez Bezos’ post comes after she and husband Jeff Bezos attended Sweeney’s space-inspired birthday party in September. Sweeney was also one of the guests at the couple’s star-studded wedding in June.

Martin, the subject of Sweeney’s new movie, is an International Boxing Hall of Fame member who officially retired from professional boxing in 2012 after 49 wins. Christy follows her journey into boxing and the abuse she endured from her husband and trainer, James “Jim” Martin, whom Ben Foster plays in the film.

“Christy Martin never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia — until she discovered a knack for punching people,” a synopsis explains. “Fueled by grit, raw determination and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Foster).”

The synopsis adds, “But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it — confronting family, identity and a relationship that just might become life-or-death.”

On Wednesday night, Martin also shouted out Sweeney on Instagram, writing, “I’ve always been a fighter. My life reflected that in every way and now I fight for others. The past few days I have seen some people attack my friend Sydney Sweeney. Syd not only worked her ass off for this film, she worked her ass off for me. For my story. For so many others suffering in silence. So I want to be clear about who Syd is. She is my friend and ally!”

Christy is in theaters now.
