“Little House” Alum Kyle Richards Says She Asked for a Cameo in the New Netflix Series

Kyle Richards very much wants to go back to the prairie.

Richards, 57, spoke to Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Aug. 9 and revealed that she pitched herself to appear in the new Little House on the Prairie adaptation that came to Netflix this summer.

“I would love to make an appearance. Don’t think I didn’t ask them!” she said.

Richards previously had a role in the 1974 adaptation of the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. That series, which starred Melissa Gilbert as Laura and Michael Landon as her father Charles Ingalls, ran for nine seasons until 1983. Beginning in the show’s second season, Richards played Alicia Sanderson Edwards, the adopted daughter of Isaiah and Grace Edwards (played by Victor French and Bonnie Bartlett). She appeared in 19 episodes of the show.

“They’re like, ‘Well, it starts before that you’re on the show,’ ” Richards said the producers told her. The first season of the Netflix series, which stars Alice Halsey as Laura and Luke Bracey as Charles, takes place entirely on the “prairie,” near Independence, Kan.; in the finale, the family agrees to move to Walnut Grove, the primary setting of the 1974 series. 

“I’m like, ‘Well, whatever. I can do a cameo and play someone else,’ ” Richards said. “So, yeah, I want to be on the new Little House on the Prairie!”

Richards added that watching the new series has been “very touching” and “nostalgic for her.” 

“I was telling my daughters, I can’t help but walk down memory lane watching that and seeing the man who’s playing Mr. Edwards, who was my dad on the show, and everything,” she said. Warren Christie plays Mr. Edwards in the new series.

“I can remember, as a little girl, and I was only 5 when I started that, what it felt like to put on that clothing — the little hook [I needed] to put my shoes on for the buckles,” she said. “It’s just really taking me back.”

Though Richards is now best known for starring on the reality show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, a role she’s held since 2010, she continued to work as a child actor in the 1970s and early 1980s. She had roles in movies and shows like 1976’s Police Story, 1977’s The Car and 1980’s The Watcher in the Woods. She also played Lindsey Wallace in John Carpenter’s 1978 film Halloween. Decades later, she returned for 2021’s Halloween Kills and 2022’s Halloween Ends.

Though Richards’ wish for a cameo hasn’t been granted (yet), one of her former Little House costars did pop up in the new Netflix show. Alison Arngrim, who starred on the original series as Laura’s chief bully Nellie Oleson, appeared in the show as “a crazy lady in the woods,” she told Tudum in July. 

“They’re hanging out in the woods, having their little dinner, a little campfire in the forest, and the two poor unsuspecting Ingalls girls wander in, and we’re like, ‘Hi, come hang out with us.’ I thought, ‘Oh, that’s creepy as all get‑out. That sounds right up my alley. I’ll be right over!’ ” Arngrim said of agreeing to the cameo. 

The new Little House series also had an Easter egg for fans of the 1985 miniseries Anne of Green Gables. Megan Follows, who starred as Anne in that show, appeared in one episode as Laura’s great-great-great-grandmother. 

The original Little House also starred Karen Grassle as Caroline Ingalls, Melissa Sue Anderson as Mary Ingalls and twins Sidney and Lindsay Greenbush as Carrie Ingalls. The new version features Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline and Skywalker Hughes as Mary. The show was renewed for a second season ahead of its July premiere. 

Richards, meanwhile, is now appearing in The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Roaring 20th, which celebrates 20 years of the Real Housewives franchise. 

Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie is streaming now. The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo and streams the next day on Peacock.
