Man Found Dead Days After Disappearing from Calif. Campsite He Visited with Fiancée

Authorities do not suspect foul play in the death of Brian Schofield, 47, at this time

A man camping near Big Bear Lake in California was found dead on Tuesday, Aug. 4, a day after being reported missing by his fiancée.

Brian Schofield, 47, was camping with his fiancée, whose identity has not been publicly released, when he was reported missing at 8:53 a.m. local time on Monday, Aug. 3, the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department said in a press release.

Schofield was last seen at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time the day before, on Aug. 2, at Yellow Post Campsite #33.

“When his fiancée awoke in the morning, Brian was nowhere to be found,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department said in the press release. He was eventually found “deceased near his campsite.”

“A preliminary investigation indicates there are no signs of foul play surrounding the circumstances of his death,” the press release reads. “The Big Bear Station would like to thank the community for sharing the information in the search for Brian.”

PEOPLE reached out to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office. A cause of death for Schofield has not yet been confirmed.
