Mariah Carey Says She’s Trying Not to Get ‘Too Excited’ About Rock Hall Nomination: ‘I Didn’t Expect It’

  • Mariah Carey is nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
  • She said in an interview that she doesn’t know if she’s going to win, so she doesn’t “want to get too excited about it”
  • The star was nominated in 2024 as well

Mariah Carey is not getting ahead of herself when it comes to her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination.

The music superstar is set to find out later this month whether she’ll be inducted into the prestigious Rock Hall — and says in a new interview that her nomination took her by surprise.

“That’s a huge honor. I don’t know if I’m going to win it, so I don’t want to get too excited about it,” she told the Associated Press. “So, I just want to say that, again, it’s a huge honor and I guess I didn’t expect it. I wasn’t really thinking about it. And here we here.”

Carey, 56, was nominated in 2024, but was not selected. In February, it was announced that she was on the slate of nominees once again, alongside stars like Cyndi Lauper, Billy Idol, Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker, OutKast and Oasis.

“I don’t really know if genre matters,” she said. “I feel like people are more open to all different genres, much more than they were, you know? But I feel like a rock star sometimes.”

Artists and bands become eligible for nomination 25 years after releasing their first commercial recording, and Carey’s debut came out in 1990. This year’s inductees will be revealed later this month, with a ceremony set to take place in Los Angeles in the fall.

Elsewhere in the interview, the “We Belong Together” singer revealed that she still “really” wants to release her long-lost ‘90s grunge album, and already has “so many ideas” for videos to accompany the music.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to pull it together by the summer but maybe, maybe I’ll release a few songs from it,” she said.

She also teased the possibility of putting out music with her 13-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan, who joined her onstage last year during her Christmas Time tour.

“I would love to [put out an album with them],” she said. “They just have a lot of their own things that they’re doing, and I don’t want to force them to do anything.”

As for new music, the star, whose last album of original songs came in 2018, said she’s “not supposed to talk” about new music, but is working on “something new.”

Carey was recently honored with the Icon Award at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards, and used the moment in the spotlight to pay tribute to her mother, who died in August.

“On this Saint Patrick’s Day, I want to honor my mother Patricia Carey for giving me the gift of music,” she said.

“Thank you iHeart for this incredible honor. As a kid, I used to listen to my favorite artist on the radio and dream of being on the airwave myself. Now, for those of you who may not know what airwaves are, think of it as the non-WiFi version of streaming, OK?” Carey said elsewhere in her speech. “Even now I still get excited when I hear one of my songs playing on the radio. It never stops being magical.”
