NEED TO KNOW

  • Genevieve Goings’ 6-year-old son Kamari’s hilarious school photo went viral for his intense and unique “hard smile” pose
  • Kamari’s personality shines through in the photos as a silly science-loving kid who dreams of becoming an astronaut
  • Goings says the viral moment has brought joy online and plans to turn the photos into lasting family keepsakes

Like many parents, Genevieve Goings looked forward to seeing her son's school picture day photos. But the moment she opened them, any expectation of a typical portrait went out the window.

Instead of a polished smile and simple pose, the Grammy-winning artist and kids' talent coach — who some may recognize from her years on Disney Junior's Choo Choo Soul — was met with something far more unforgettable: her 6-year-old son Kamari's fully committed, slightly intense “hard smile.”

“I was crying laughing immediately,” Goings tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I had to catch my breath before I could even show my husband.”

What she saw in those photos quickly became more than just a funny moment — it felt like a perfect snapshot of Kamari's personality. At home, he's a “silly, happy, science-loving” kid who dreams of becoming an astronaut and is constantly entertaining his family with his humor.

“I don't even think it needs an explanation,” Goings says. “That ‘hard smile' is pure comedy.”

The pose, she says, was entirely his own creation. Rather than following the usual cues for school portraits, Kamari appeared to lean fully into his own idea of what a “professional” photo should look like and committed to it completely.

“He's always making us laugh with his impressions and dance moves,” she says. “He clearly had a very specific vision for how a ‘professional' school photo should look, and it was… original!”

Looking back, Goings suspects the moment only escalated once Kamari realized he had an audience. Any small reaction in the room may have encouraged him to push the expression even further.

“I'm sure the photographer tried to get him to do something else,” she says. “But if just one person giggled a little bit, he probably went full silly-goose on them.”

After seeing the photos over the weekend, Goings decided to share them online, expecting little more than a few laughs from friends and family. Instead, the post quickly took on a life of its own.

Within days, Kamari's photos had gone viral, drawing millions of views and thousands of comments from people who couldn't get enough of his unforgettable pose.

“I originally just wanted to share a laugh,” she says. “But my online community feels like extended family by now. I knew other parents would relate to that ‘picture day' pressure.”

“It's been so joyful,” Goings says. “Kamari definitely has thousands of new ‘Internet Aunties' now!”

As the photos continued to circulate, some viewers even began pointing out a celebrity resemblance, adding another layer of humor to the moment.

“I love that people say he reminds them of Tahj Mowry!” she adds.

At home, Kamari has been just as amused by the reaction, fully in on the joke even if he doesn't completely understand the scale of it yet. To him, the attention feels more like a fun surprise than anything else.

“He cracked up,” Goings says. “He thinks he looks hilarious.”

While he's still wrapping his head around what it means to go viral, he's already starting to piece it together in his own way.

“He just kept saying, ‘Wait, am I on YouTube now?'” she recalls.

Even as the internet moves on, Goings knows these photos will have a lasting place in their family's story. What started as a routine school moment has already become something they'll hold onto for years to come.

“Oh, these are definitely being blown up poster-size for his high school graduation and his wedding,” she jokes. “It's the ultimate ‘mom blackmail' for the future!”

And as the laughter continues, so do her plans for keeping the moment alive.

“I honestly think I need to make T-shirts,” she adds.
