Nick Carter had sweet early fatherhood flashbacks thanks to Paw Patrol.
The pop star recently attended the Aug. 2 Los Angeles premiere of Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie with his three children, a sweet benefit of the Backstreet Boys including a new song, “Bottle Up,” on the film’s soundtrack.
Watching the animated film brought back “tons of emotions” for the star, who is dad to Odin, 10, Saoirse, 6, and Pearl, 5, with his wife Lauren Kitt Carter.
“I am the youngest out of all the guys,” Carter, 46, tells PEOPLE. “When my son was born in right around 2016, that was the first show that we watched. And then we bought all the toys. And so, year after year, every season we would be watching it.”

He continues: “But now that we have a song in the movie, we just brought the kids to the premiere the other day and they were sitting there eating popcorn, and they were just giggling out loud and laughing.”
Carter says he’s not sure “if they even understand” their dad has a song in the film. “They know that who we are, but I don’t know if they understand really what it’s about right now. They’re still so young. For us, it’s just emotions, tons of emotions.”
A.J. McLean says that despite over 30 years with the Backstreet Boys, the Hollywood moments still hit.
A music video for “Bottle Up”, which was co-written by Ed Sheeran and Savan Kotecha, features the Backstreet Boys dancing alongside the iconic pups Rex, Marshall, Skye, Chase, Rubble and Rocky.
“It’s still surreal to me when we hear our songs on the radio, even though we’ve been doing this for three decades,” says McLean, 48. “To be sitting in the theater at the premiere and hearing the song in the movie, it’s just cool.”
The Backstreet Boys are currently performing their Into the Millennium residency at the Las Vegas Sphere through the end of August. On Aug. 10, they announced they were adding three New Year’s shows starting Dec. 31.
“We’re definitely going to bring it,” McLean tells PEOPLE. Adds Howie Dorough: “If you came to the last New Year’s concert, you know there’s a little special [something] that we try to implement… We haven’t exactly cooked up what that’s going to be yet, but it’s going to be something cool.”
