Parents Spend $65K to Move Into Garage So 3 Kids Can Have Their Own Rooms (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW

  • Shannon Boggs has over 700,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares her life as a mother, wife and DIY creator
  • Last year, her family of five decided they needed more space and got to work
  • In April 2025, they completed a large-scale renovation, allowing all three of her children to have their own rooms

Faced with the challenge of a growing family and limited space, a family of five decided to expand rather than relocate.

Their 1,920-square-foot house in Eastern Shore, Va. – featuring three bedrooms and three full bathrooms – was no longer meeting their needs.

Instead of leaving behind a home filled with a decade’s worth of memories, Shannon Boggs and her husband chose to renovate their attached one-and-a-half-car garage into a master suite with its own entry.

The decision gave each of their three children a bedroom of their own, while allowing the family to stay rooted in the home they love.

“Our oldest daughters have been sharing a room for the past six years, so we started looking at houses on the market for a while and just couldn’t find anything we would be happy with compared to where we were at, so we decided on renovation,” Boggs, 34, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

When the family found out they were expecting their third child, they knew it was time to start thinking about how to make their space work long-term.

Although they were considering an addition, the attached garage was already too tight to comfortably fit a car, so they began considering other possibilities.

To help bring their ideas to life, Boggs invited a creative friend to tape off the garage and visualize how it could be transformed into livable space.

“It was a one-and-a-half-car garage that wasn’t large enough for me to park our suburban in. It was too shallow. It was 480 square feet that ended up being just storage that also acted as our laundry room,” Boggs explains.

“We have been doing laundry in the garage for the last 10 years, and we were tired of it. It wasn’t heated or air conditioned. I dreamed of a laundry room inside my house for a long time.”

Their solution was to build a new master bedroom and bathroom suite, complete with a walk-in closet and an additional hallway closet.

“With the way the market is now, we definitely saved money versus doing an entire addition or buying something new,” Boggs says. “We are very satisfied with our decision, and it was roughly $65,000.”

The renovation was done in two phases: first, they transformed their dining room into a mudroom and entryway, opened a load-bearing wall to connect it with the kitchen, and turned a full bathroom into a half bath with laundry space by removing the tub.

They started work in December 2024 and wrapped things up by mid-January 2025, before moving on to the next phase.

Phase two – the garage conversion – started right after and was completed by late April 2025, giving the family a functional new layout.

Boggs admits “living through the constant contractors in and out of the house at all times of the night” was one of the toughest parts of the renovation process.

“Sometimes they were here from 6:30 a.m. until 9 p.m., but once they had the bedroom door, it wasn’t too bad,” she tells PEOPLE. “We also celebrated Christmas through all the chaos.”

It was all worth it in the end, as Boggs’ children were beyond excited to have their own spaces and, of course, to start decorating.

“We have made so many memories here. We looked for a year or two for a place but couldn’t find anything that we really wanted compared to what we have, so we decided on home improvements and making our home the way we want it,” Boggs says. “We have raised our kids in this home, which makes it hard to leave.”
