A popular nut butter sold exclusively at Walmart has been recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination.
Botticelli Foods recalled one lot of BetterGoods Pistachio Nut Butter after Walmart learned on July 17 that three jars of the product tested positive for Salmonella during a routine inspection by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in an Aug. 3 announcement.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious infections in young children, older adults, and those with a weakened immune system, the FDA said. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, diarrhea, which may be bloody, fever, nausea, and vomiting.
The recalled lot of the nut butter comes in a 6.7 oz. (190 g) glass jar with UPC 194346207961, Lot Code LB028ACP04 and an expiration date of Jan. 28, 2027.
The product was distributed by Walmart stores across 19 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington and Wyoming.
No other lots of BetterGoods Pistachio Nut Butter are subject to the recall, said the FDA.
“Safety is a top priority,” Walmart said in a statement to Newsweek regarding the recall.
“When notified of recalls, we move swiftly to remove the impacted products from our stores and implement a sales block at our registers and online,” the statement continued. “We are working closely with our supplier, and customers who have this should discontinue use.”
While the FDA said that no illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recall, consumers who purchased a recalled product are “urged not to consume the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.”
