A federal public health alert has been issued for a ravioli pasta product found at Costco locations in Maryland and New Jersey after items labeled as beef sauce and burrata ravioli were found to contain shrimp ravioli.
On Monday, May 4, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a press release that the ravioli was under the alert due to “misbranding and undeclared allergens.”
“The shrimp and lobster, known allergens (shellfish), are not declared on the product label,” the statement read. “FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with shellfish allergies are aware that this product should not be consumed.”
The safety alert affects 32-oz. plastic bag packages containing “Giovanni Rana RANA Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli" sold at Costco.

While packaging on the affected products displays the “use by” dates ranging from May 14 to June 25, the items, which had the establishment number of “44870,” were sold between March 10 and April 21.
They were shipped to Costco stores in Maryland and New Jersey, according to the report.
Since the affected products are no longer for sale, a recall has not been issued.
Health officials were first alerted about the undeclared products when Costco notified FSIS after receiving two reports of beef sauce and burrata ravioli containing shrimp ravioli.

While there have been no reports of illness, authorities urge people to contact a health care provider for any concerns.
“FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers,” the release read. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
