Scott Speedman is back for season 2 as the titular private investigator of R.J. Decker — and dodging rocker-launchers while he’s at it.

Inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s 1987 novel Double Whammy, the popular, comedic ABC crime drama follows disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con R.J. Decker as he reinvents himself as a P.I. in South Florida. 

Season 2 will pick up after the shocking season 1 finale, in which politician Victor Ochoa (David Zayas), whose corruption R.J. and his crew helped uncover, was found dead in his pool. While each episode features its own mystery to solve, showrunner Rob Doherty confirmed to TV Insider that the mystery surrounding who killed Victor will drive the new season forward.

Speedman told PEOPLE in April 2026 that the cliffhanger “raises the stakes for the character and the show itself,” explaining, “he’s going to be one of the number one suspects, and that whole group is going to be put into the spotlight.”

That group includes R.J.’s inner circle: Victor’s daughter Emilia “Emi” Ochoa (Jaina Lee Ortiz), R.J.’s ex-wife Catherine Delacroix (Adelaide Clemens), Catherine’s wife Detective Melody “Mel” Abreu (Bevin Bru) and his best friend and former cellmate Aloysius “Wish” Aiken (Kevin Rankin). The season 2 trailer promises a deeper look at R.J.’s relationships with his team, as well as plenty of unique Florida cases.

When does R.J. Decker season 2 premiere?

R.J. Decker premieres on ABC on Sept. 15, following Dancing with the Stars’ season 35 premiere.

The season 2 premiere serves as a crossover event with the dance competition series. There will be cameos from DWTS pros Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy, as well as The Bachelor’s Joey Graziadei, who won DWTS season 33, per Entertainment Weekly.

Beyond the shimmying visit, the mystery of who killed Victor is expected to motor the sophomore season’s overarching storyline, including digging into people from the corrupt politician’s shady past. 

“Who was Victor in bed with, and could they have done him in?” Doherty mused to TV Insider in April 2026.

How many episodes are in R.J. Decker season 2?

R.J. Decker was renewed in May 2026, but ABC has not announced an episode count for season 2.

In its first season, the P.I. drama debuted as a midseason replacement with nine episodes.

What is the R.J. Decker season 2 episode release schedule?

ABC has announced the titles of the first three episodes of R.J. Decker season 3.

Season 1 ended with a fresh start for R.J. and Emi, but Victor’s death could see a major setback in their relationship. Still, Speedman has hope for the pair as a couple. 

“I don’t think R.J.’s had a real relationship for a long time,” the Grey’s Anatomy star told PEOPLE. “And I think he’s okay with not knowing what it is. I know they talk about defining what they are in the season finale and what that is, but I think R.J. is just so happy that he’s in something again and something so odd. … I don’t think he’s that worried about where it’s headed right now.”

As for Doherty, he shared that strain on the pair will be a necessary consequence of Victor’s death.

“It will disrupt the Emi and RJ relationship, not just because each can, will, and should be looked at as suspects, but Emi’s going to carry some guilt,” the showrunner told TV Insider. “She didn’t see any of this coming, but the truth is she teed him up for an arrest, and the arrest made him a vulnerability to someone else, someone to be identified.”

When do new episodes of R.J. Decker season 2 come out?

R.J. Decker will air on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC and be released on Hulu the following day.

The series takes the place of what was formerly High Potential’s Tuesday night spot.
