Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey are teasing a mystery worthy of Sherlock Holmes: will there be another movie starring Robert as the famed detective?
“I don’t know,” Robert, 61, told the Associated Press at the 2026 Lincoln Center Spring Gala when asked about a follow-up to 2009's Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel. “People are talking about it, but she’s the producer,” he added, nodding at his wife.
The Emmy Award-winning Susan, 52, has produced dozens of Hollywood series and movies, including some starring her Oscar-winning husband. The pair, married since August 2005, share two sons and a daughter.
When it comes to further big-screen adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional crime solver, Susan will “have the last word,” Robert said, wiggling his eyebrows at the camera.
With a sly grin, Susan chimed in, “It’s the greatest mystery.” The Iron Man star then burst out laughing.
Guy Ritchie directed both Sherlock Holmes films, which starred Jude Law as the titular detective's sidekick Watson. Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Noomi Rapace and Jared Harris also appeared in the hit two-movie series.
In 2016, outlets reported that distributor Warner Bros. had a third film in development. After it was announced in 2019 that the project’s release date had been moved to 2021, Sherlock Holmes 3 disappeared from the studio’s slate.
Held on Monday, May 18, this year’s Lincoln Center Spring Gala honored the Downeys at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, currently home to the Broadway revival of the musical Ragtime. Robert made his Broadway debut at the venue in Ayad Akhtar's new play McNeal in the fall of 2024. The starry event included Daniel Radcliffe, Paul Bettany, Tessa Thompson, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Mark Strong, Stephen Flaherty, Oscar Isaac and more.
