Sheik, 56, burst onto the music scene with his debut hit single “Barely Breathing,” which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Since then, he has released nine studio albums.

In 2002, he wrote an original score for the New York Shakespeare Festival’s production of Twelfth Night, the start of a second career as a composer for stage productions and movie soundtracks.

Sheik’s best-known stage work is the music of Spring Awakening, written with Steven Sater. The original Broadway production won Tony Awards for Best Orchestrations, Best Original Score and Best Musical and a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. A new off-Broadway production is planned to open at Studio Seaview this fall.

The new production will start previews on Nov. 27, with an official opening set for Dec. 17. The limited engagement will end on Feb. 14, Playbill reported.

The musician also wrote the music and lyrics for an upcoming new off-Broadway production, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, Theater Mania reported in May. Kenny Kurokawa, RAYMAN and executive producer Antonio Marion announced that the show, based on a Manga by Moyoco Anno, would be staged at the Night Egg at the Culture Club this fall.
