Sophia Bush reveals why now felt like the right time to release her memoir.
The One Tree Hill alum, 44, said she had been encouraged to write a memoir for years, but it wasn’t until recently that she felt ready to share her story. This fall, she’ll publish her debut memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress.
“I think I finally had to feel ready to answer the call,” she told PEOPLE on the carpet for the A Sense of Home (ASOH) Gala, where she was honored with a Vanguard Angel Award for her advocacy work.
“I’ve had my lovely book agent who has the patience of a saint and a handful of editors asking me to write a book for a decade. And for nine years, I said no,” she recalled. “And I think when your life finally feels like all the pieces are in the right place, you start to realize why people might want you to share your story.”
As she prepared to write her own, she reread memoirs by some of her favorite authors and realized that her own story might serve as “a guidepost for other people” — just like theirs did in her own life.
“I thought, ‘Oh, there was a season when I really needed this and I might be entering into the season where I get to do this for women coming after me,’ ” she shared.
When asked if there were any particular stories that she wanted to tell in her memoir, the actress teased, “So many, but you’ll have to read them in the book.”

Bush’s memoir opens up about her childhood, the “unexpected road from journalism to student to actor,” her life-changing decade of One Tree Hill, the realities of marriage and divorce in the spotlight and her years on Chicago P.D., among other stories, according to an official synopsis.
“At turns both personal and universal, And I Will Tell You Mine is Sophia’s unforgettable journey through becoming, un-becoming and becoming again; embracing the light when the world feels overwhelmingly dark; and finally, joyously, coming home to your truest self,” the synopsis continues.
While Bush explores her own journey of finding her way home to herself in her memoir, she also spoke about the importance of helping others find a sense of home at the ASOH Gala. The nonprofit is dedicated to preventing homelessness by creating first-ever homes and communities for youth aging out of foster care.

“I think it’s just an incredibly important thing, firstly, to be here and to support the organization expanding to New York,” she shared, referencing the organization’s move to the Big Apple in May.
Bush went on to reflect on her family life with partner Ashlyn Harris and Harris’ two children, Sloane and Ocean, and the importance of creating a loving and supportive home.

“For us as a family that was built through adoption and that is blended and that is non-traditional, in many senses, I think to people, we’re really proud to be here and to support people that are likewise willing to build their beautiful families in different ways. It’s really special,” she added.
For the Stay Alive star, supporting ASOH is ultimately about helping people create the kind of belonging she knows the value of firsthand — something she also explores throughout her memoir.
And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress will be released on Oct. 27 and is available now for preorder, wherever books are sold.
