St. Denis Medical’s Matt Is — But Isn’t — On a Date With Serena: ‘Nice to Be Out on the Town’ (Exclusive)

St. Denis Medical finally has Matt and Serena out on a date — if you squint close enough.

In Us Weekly’s exclusive clip from the Tuesday, April 22, episode of the NBC series, Matt (Mekki Leeper) and Serena (Kahyun Kim) attend a gala with the rest of the employees from the hospital.

“Matthew, a little overdressed are we? Agent 000 over here,” Bruce (Josh Lawson) quipped while Ron (David Alan Grier) added, “Now I got to rework the top of my act to include this.”

Serena, however, stepped in to say she loved Matt’s look. “I have never been to a gala before this, so I probably shouldn’t ask my mom what to wear,” Matt shared in a confessional. “But I’m still excited about tonight. It is nice to be out on the town with Serena.”

He continued: “Not with her — it’s not a date. But dinner, drinks and dancing? All the elements are there so I am just pointing that out.”

According to the official synopsis, the penultimate episode is set at an annual fundraiser where “Alex and her husband, Tim, try to have a wild, kid-free night. Ron and Joyce butt heads over hosting duties, and Bruce sets out to win this year’s Dancing with the Caregivers competition.”

St. Denis Medical, which has been renewed for a second season, follows overworked doctors and nurses trying their best to care for patients at an underfunded Oregon hospital. In addition to Leeper and Kim, the mockumentary stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Grier, Allison Tolman, Lawson and Kaliko Kauahi.

“It’s so fun to be in a mockumentary. I cherish the moments where I get to look into the camera and have that relationship,” Kim, 35, exclusively told Us before the show’s premiere in November 2024. “Especially with Serena, it’s really fun because she’s so honest and you can really tell how she feels from her face. I love having that connection with the audience in that way.”

Leeper, 30, meanwhile, told Us his time on the St. Denis Medical set has been “a blast.”

“I grew up wanting to be on a show like The Office or Parks and Recreation. Then I think there were some years where they weren’t making as many of those types of shows,” he explained. “It took somebody like Quinta Brunson [from Abbott Elementary] to blow open the doors again for shows like this to be popular.”

Viewers couldn’t help but notice that Matt and Serena’s romance could make them the next fan-favorite sitcom couple, which Leeper and Kim didn’t disagree with at the time.

“They sure are,” Kim told Us, while Lepper added, “Certainly in the sense that in the early seasons — which we are currently in — we’re wondering will they or won’t they?”

Lepper hinted for Us to keep an eye on Matt and Serena. “It is on our minds each and every day,” he teased. “And there’s just no way to tell [yet] if they will or if they won’t.”

Creator Eric Ledgin didn’t rule out a potential romance between Matt and Serena, telling Us, “There’s definitely at least a one-sided will-they-or-won’t-they happening. So I can tell you it’ll definitely be a slow burn of something that we will track over time.”

St. Denis Medical airs on NBC Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET before streaming the next day on Peacock.
