The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the crash, which took place in Sun Valley, located in the San Fernando Valley, was reported just before 1:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, per KTLA, CBS Los Angeles and ABC 7.
The SUV, a Chevrolet Suburban, was heading north on the 5 Freeway near Sheldon Street when it crashed into a center median, overturning and ejecting multiple passengers, according to witnesses who reported the incident to the CHP.

Photos obtained by the local outlets showed the Suburban overturned on its roof, sitting on the side of the freeway in the aftermath of the crash.
Debris, including a stroller and children's toys, could be seen on the freeway as ambulances, fire trucks and law enforcement vehicles arrived at the scene, according to KTLA.
The CHP told ABC that two lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway were shut down near the crash site for about an hour early on Saturday morning.
Authorities said drug and alcohol use is not believed to be a factor in the crash, but it was still unclear whether each passenger in the SUV was wearing a seat belt.
The CHP did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for information about the crash.
