Tyler Baltierra is sharing more about his relationship with his older daughter Carly, whom he and his wife Catelynn Lowell placed for adoption in 2009.
During a Monday, April 27, appearance on the Cake for Dinner podcast, Baltierra opened up about how his relationship with Carly is going. On an April 2025 episode of their podcast Cate and Ty Break It Down, the couple shared that they hadn't received a visit from their oldest in over two years.
"As far as our relationship goes, we don't really have one," Baltierra shared. "I set up an email for her that me and Cate will write to that's pretty much the only way we're maintaining any kind of communication."

The dad of four said although Carly doesn't have the login at the moment, he is hopeful that one day she'll be able to go in and see all the letters they wrote her.
"We figured if we set up an email for her, and write to it, and one day if she ever wants it, we can give her the login and she can kind of just go through the email herself," Baltierra said. "We let her know that she's not forgotten about."
He went on to say that it's Carly's decision if she wants to have a relationship with him and Catelynn.

"Me and Cate accept the fact that she may get older and want nothing to do with us," he explained. "She might not even like us, which is okay. As her birth parent, my duty is to be there to answer the questions she has as an adoptee. I think she's owed that."
In March, Catelynn and Tyler's daughter Novalee, 11, appeared on their podcast and spoke about spending time with her sister Carly. Novalee shared that she was upset she hadn't seen her sister in the past few years since she loves spending time with her.
"With meeting Carly and spending time with Carly, [that's] one of the best things that’s ever happened. I’ve never been able to look up to somebody before. And it’s the best feeling ever to have,” said Novalee.
Catelynn jumped in to ask her daughter if it's been hard for her having a sister who has been placed for adoption.
“A little bit. I wish that she would be in our family. But also, you did a good decision when you were a teenager,” Novalee told her mom. “Because you didn’t have enough expenses and I think it would’ve been really, really hard building to go up.”

The couple has discussed Carly's parents pulling away and cutting off access to her on episodes of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter. Catelynn and Tyler said that sending occasional gifts to their daughter was deemed "out of control and inappropriate."
Catelynn explained to producers that they would send updates every few weeks on what's going on with their girls. However, Tyler noted that many of the messages appear to have never been delivered.
The couple then realized that Carly's parents blocked Catelynn. Tyler suggested they talk to their longtime adoption counselor, Dawn, about how to navigate this. Frustrated, he lamented, "You're closing the open adoption with no explanation as to why."
