The Hunting Wives’ Malin Akerman Says She Owes ‘Everything’ to The Comeback as She Teases Return in Third Season (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW

  • Malin Akerman says on PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly‘s Red Carpet Live show ahead of the Emmy Awards 2025 that she owes “everything” to The Comeback creators Lisa Kudrow and Michael Patrick King
  • Akerman costars with Kudrow in the HBO mockumentary series, which was renewed for a third season in June
  • The Comeback is amazing, it’s one of my favorite shows,” Hunting Wives star Akerman says

Malin Akerman is still grateful that The Comeback helped launch her acting career.

When Akerman, 47, stopped by PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly‘s Red Carpet Live show with her The Hunting Wives costar Brittany Snow ahead of the Emmy Awards 2025, the actress spoke about the June news that the HBO mockumentary series Akerman costarred in with Lisa Kudrow will return for a third and final season, more than a decade after its second season aired in 2014.

The Comeback is amazing, it’s one of my favorite shows,” Akerman says. “It is – Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow gave me life in this Hollywood world, so I owe everything to them.”

“I’m very very happy that — it’s in the name,” she says of the show’s impending return, which is expected to premiere on HBO Max in 2026.

The Comeback follows Kudrow, now 62, as a sitcom star whose fame has faded away and attempts to document her return to entertainment and acting in a new sitcom titled Room and Bored on a reality television series called The Comeback. Akerman portrays a musician who is also cast in the same show as Kudrow’s character. The series initially aired as a miniseries in 2005 and produced a second season that aired in 2014.

“No matter what the industry throws at her, Valerie Cherish is a survivor. On the 20th Anniversary of her debut, Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow have brilliantly scripted her return to HBO, and we can’t wait to see that,” HBO executive Amy Gravitt said in a statement back in June regarding the show’s return, per Deadline.

Akerman attended the Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 14 with her Hunting Wives costar Snow, 39. The awards show comes just two days after Netflix announced that the show was renewed for a second season by sharing a video Akerman and Snow made together.

“I basically said ‘we are not doing a boring announcement,’ and I know how to edit on my phone and we’re going to write this together and we’re going to edit it,” Snow said of the idea to film a video for the announcement. Akerman said she asked series creator Rebecca Cutter whether she could use her viral wig from the series for the announcement.

“Got a really bad wig from somewhere and just we made it happen,” she says, while Snow adds of the announcement, “I’m glad Netflix was okay with our bad good plan.”
