NEED TO KNOW
- Matt Benfield and Omar Ahmed started posting content together in 2019 while living in Toronto, and after they married in 2021, they settled down in San Francisco
- They’ve garnered over 1.5 million followers by documenting their adventures, sharing everyday lifestyle videos and showing their most authentic selves online
- In November 2025, they moved again to New York City, where the influencers have expanded their content to include even more exciting glimpses into their lives together
Omar Ahmed and Matt Benfield are celebrating five years of marriage this month, but this period of their life is also all about new beginnings.
The couple has garnered 1.5 million followers on TikTok by offering glimpses into their day-to-day lives — as partners, world travelers, foodies and real personalities. They've made a point to make content that brightens viewers' feeds, whether that comes in the form of comedic videos or day-in-the-life vlogs, but never at the cost of their authenticity.
When Matt, 31, and Omar, 33, started posting on social media in November 2019, the digital landscape was populated by more aspirational content that tended to focus on "aesthetics" and "wealth," as Matt recalls to PEOPLE. It was something that Omar admits made him feel slightly apprehensive to share too much of himself in the early stages of their online careers.

"All of a sudden, there were eyes on us. Especially, when you are a queer couple and you kind of talk about issues that are meaningful to you and things that you've gone through, there's hate that comes with that too," Omar reflects. "I think it was really the pandemic. It was really sitting at home too much and just really thinking about comments and how people perceived us and me."
He adds, "When I let that go, it was just so freeing, and it helped us just be a little more authentic and not really care about what people thought in that aspect and just to be ourselves."
Matt and Omar's audience flocks to their page to watch them experience life together. The pair is often considered "comfort creators," the far more approachable alternative to the glossy, aspirational lifestyle influencers that have generally dipped in popularity, at least compared to some years ago.
"People just want to relate to more people online," says Matt. "We are so ourselves on social media … When we were going through the pandemic and we first started on TikTok, people would meet us on the street and they were like, 'Oh my God. You got us through the pandemic because you put so much positivity onto the internet.' Hearing those stories is the reason why we do this."
They found community on social media during a time of isolation, but their love story dates back a few years earlier. Matt and Omar met in 2017, while they were both living in Berlin. They relocated to Toronto in 2018, where they lived during the pandemic. They married in 2021, and the following year, the couple made their way to San Francisco.
Their careers continued to grow while they were calling Northern California home. They launched a podcast in their living room "with two old, junky mics and two little iPhones," as Omar recalls. They partnered with a local San Francisco bakery and added a specialty item to the menu.

Matt and Omar are keen to expand on everything they accomplished in San Francisco in bigger, better and bolder ways now that they live in New York City. They moved across the country in November, and the social media stars started taking advantage of the many vibrant opportunities as soon as they touched down on the East Coast.
"The other week I was like, 'Let's walk the length of Manhattan,' or … 'Let's go walk across all the bridges in the city,'" Matt says of how the move has changed their content. "Especially as we're new to a place, it's fun to be able to share that experience of exploring the city and learning new things and doing new things with people because they might not have the opportunity to do these things."

Omar notes how New York is shaping them on personal levels, too. He's particularly interested in beauty and fashion, and the change in scenery has allowed him to even further lean into self-expression. Naturally, his elevated wardrobe tends to garner complimentary comments on videos they make, and it's helped Omar see more potential in style-focused content.
"They'll be like, 'Oh my God. Your outfit's so cool,' and I'm like, 'Oh, I wish I'd touched on that a little bit more [in the video].' It's inspiring us to create the content about the things that we just do generally day to day. We do get ready. I do my makeup, and people are interested in those things," adds Omar. "It's kind of opening up more of a holistic view on our lives."

With every passing year since the duo started creating content, it's felt like they've continuously checked off big hopes and dreams, like going to Coachella with a brand, which they did this year with Alaska Airlines. Next, they're hoping to relaunch their podcast with higher production and, of course, go to New York Fashion Week.
"We've always been so interested in fashion, but living in New York now, we get to wear our favorite outfits and go out and do cool things and show our outfits off," says Omar. "Just to be at those events and meeting these cool people and seeing the clothes that we aspire to on the runway and having that New York experience."
