NEED TO KNOW

  • John-Paul Miller founded and served as the head pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
  • Mica Miller became involved in the church when she and her family moved there while she was a teenager
  • Mica died by suicide after accusing John-Paul Miller of abuse

Mica Miller and John-Paul Miller were both actively involved in Solid Rock Church before her death in April 2024.

The church was located in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and was led by John-Paul as the pastor. Mica met John-Paul after she and her family moved from Kansas to Myrtle Beach when she was a teenager.

At the time, John-Paul was married to Alison Williams, with whom he welcomed five children. Mica married her first husband, Jeremy, when she was 18 years old. However, in 2015, the two started to have an affair when she was 20 and he was 35 years old, per the Death of the Pastor’s Wife docuseries, which was released on Aug. 26 on Netflix. They eventually divorced their respective partners and got married in 2017.

However, their relationship was allegedly toxic, with Mica’s friends and family members claiming in the docuseries that John-Paul was emotionally manipulative and overly controlling. They separated in 2023, but John-Paul allegedly cyberstalked and tracked her, according to prosecutors. On April 27, 2024, Mica died by suicide at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina.

The following year, John-Paul was indicted for alleged cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators. John-Paul has since sold the church — however, he continues to preach.

So, what happened to Solid Rock Church? Here’s what to know about the congregation after Mica Miller’s death.

The Solid Rock Church was a Christian church in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

John-Paul founded the church and started pastoring there in 2016, according to Newsweek. John-Paul, who also went by “JP,” led with the motto, “Love God and Love People.”

John-Paul said that he created Solid Rock with the idea of four core values in mind: “We serve,” “We forgive,” “We respect” and “We give,” per WBTW Myrtle Beach.

Among other things, John-Paul preached about relationships. “Do not refuse sex to each other, then Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control,” he said during one sermon, which was shown in the docuseries. “Can you believe … And I don’t know if y’all get tempted. Maybe only pastors get tempted. ‘Kay? Maybe it’s only me.”

He added, “When you refuse to meet this need in your marriage, your spouse will leave you emotionally. They’ll put up a hard heart. And a man never wants to be rejected more than once. After that rejection, unless there’s forgiveness and you repent for it, his heart gets hard.”

In a February 2021 sermon, John-Paul called the topic of money “the most fascinating subject to me in the Bible,” per WBTW Myrtle Beach.

“All growing up, I saw Christians manipulate each other financially, I’ve seen spouses break up and have horrible marriages because they fight about money, I’ve seen friendships that were supposed to last forever disintegrate because of money,” he said.

John-Paul was directly involved in Solid Rock Church as the founder and senior pastor. He came from a religious background, as his father, Reginald Wayne Miller, was also a pastor and founded the Cathedral Bible College, according to The Island Packet.

Reginald has faced a number of legal issues over the years. In 2014, he pleaded guilty to visa fraud and wage and hour violations in federal court, according to the Department of Justice. Over a decade later, both he and John-Paul were accused of “sexual abuse and predatory conduct — often targeting minors” in a February 2025 complaint filed in Horry County’s Court of Common Pleas and reviewed by PEOPLE.

“Behind their religious facade, John-Paul Miller and Reginald Wayne Miller engaged in sexual abuse and predatory conduct — often targeting minors,” the complaint read. “They used their positions of power to manipulate and exploit vulnerable victims while concealing their actions from the public.”

Both Reginald and John-Paul have denied the allegations, and John-Paul countersued the woman in March 2025, per The Sun News.

Meanwhile, Mica and her family moved from Wichita, Kan., to Myrtle Beach when she was a teenager. The family had a strong foundation in both faith and music, and music was particularly important to Mica.

“My whole family is very musically talented, but Mica has the best voice,” her brother, Nate, said in the Netflix docuseries. “She loved singing.”

Mica quickly became a devoted follower of Solid Rock and eventually held the position of the worship leader in charge of the church’s choir, per the docuseries. Mica was also serving as John-Paul’s assistant and nanny.

In 2015, Mica, then 20, and John-Paul, then 35, began allegedly having an affair, according to Death of the Pastor’s Wife. At the time, Mica was married to her first husband, Jeremy, and John-Paul was married to Williams. Mica and John-Paul eventually divorced their respective spouses and married in November 2017.

Mica and John-Paul allegedly faced several struggles during their marriage — including infidelity allegations.

Her friends and family members spoke about the troubled relationship in Death of the Pastor’s Wife and alleged that he “mentally tortured” her during their marriage. Friends claimed that he used various controlling tactics, such as not letting her sleep until they had sex and limiting her time with friends.

“He would mentally torture her until she gave to him what he wanted,” Mica’s friend Bruna Pabon claimed.

They accused John-Paul of having multiple affairs — including allegedly with his current wife, Suzie Skinner.

After years of alleged abuse, Mica separated from John-Paul in January 2023 and filed for divorce later that year, according to WPDE. Mica tried to move on by restarting her life and career, but she was allegedly stalked by John-Paul, who contacted “her over 50 times in a single day,” per prosecutors.

John-Paul also allegedly involuntarily hospitalized Mica, stole her belongings, tracked her car with a GPS device and posted a nude photo of her online, according to prosecutors. Mica initially dismissed her divorce filing in February 2024 before filing for divorce for a second time two months later.

Just two days after her second divorce filing, Mica called 911 to tell them that she was going to die by suicide at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina. Police later found her deceased on April 27, 2024, and her death was later ruled a suicide. She was 30 years old.

John-Paul has denied any involvement in Mica’s death, and he and Suzie refused to comment to the producers of the docuseries.

John-Paul’s attorney Nathan S. Williams declined to comment to PEOPLE. Suzie was not able to be reached for comment.

What happened to Solid Rock Church?

Shortly after the news of Mica’s death, a group of protesters named “Justice for Mica” began gathering around Solid Rock Church during their Sunday services to bring awareness to domestic violence, one protester told The Sun News in February 2025.

The outlet reported that protesters would often record church-goers and shout phrases, like “You can’t hide from the FBI” and “Justice for Mica,” at them. John-Paul was later arrested in November 2024 on accusations he assaulted a protester, according to Myrtle Beach Police Department’s online records. Solid Rock Church closed its doors later that month.

“They show up to hold up signs and scream and speak into bull horns and yell and harass to the point where they basically killed the church,” John-Paul’s lawyer, Russell B. Long, said at the time, per The Sun News. “The church has died. The church has closed down.”

Before Solid Rock came to an end, the church bought two plots of land from Salem Woods Holding LLC in August 2023, per The Sun News. However, a new church has not been built as attendance has dropped since Mica’s death, according to the outlet.

In February 2025, Solid Rock Church sold for over $2 million to a company that has plans to tear down the church and build condos, according to the outlet.

“The city of [Myrtle Beach] did not come through for us, they did not protect us, they did not stop the harassment,” John-Paul texted The Sun News. “So after 70 years of that chapel being protected from category 5 hurricanes, wars, and redevelopment, it will now be torn down and have condos built in its place, thanks to the city of [Myrtle Beach].”

John-Paul continues to preach from various sites in Myrtle Beach. Suzie leads worship for the congregation members who are left, per the docuseries.
