Ted Kaczynski was born and raised in Illinois by parents Theodore Richard Kaczynski and Wanda Theresa Kaczynski alongside his younger brother, David Kaczynski.

The domestic terrorist — whose story inspired the Netflix film Unabomber, which was released on Sept. 25 — was responsible for a 17-year bombing campaign from 1978 to 1995 that killed three people and injured at least 23 others across the United States.

After David contacted federal investigators under the suspicion his brother may be behind the attacks, Ted was arrested on April 3, 1996. Ted eventually pleaded guilty to several charges and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He died by suicide in his prison cell on June 10, 2023.

Ted faulted his upbringing for his social struggles and eventual self-imposed isolation in Montana, where he lived in a cabin and planned the attacks, according to the 1999 memoir he wrote in prison, per The New York Times.

Who were Ted Kaczynski’s parents?

On May 22, 1942, Ted was born in Chicago to parents Theodore and Wanda. According to The New York Times, the couple descended from Polish immigrants in the area. They both dropped out of high school to work and earned their diplomas via night school, per the publication.

Ted’s father worked at the family’s business, Kaczynski’s Sausages. The company’s factory was situated on Chicago’s South Side, per The New York Times. Meanwhile, Ted’s mother was a homemaker.

Theodore and Wanda raised Ted and David in Evergreen Park, Ill. The parents valued academics and bonded with their boys over playing music as a quartet, per the outlet.

Around 1985, Ted mostly cut off contact with his family, apart from sporadic correspondences, as he blamed his parents for his social anxiety and for pushing him too hard in academics, per the outlet.

In February 1997, The Washington Post reported on a letter Ted sent to his mother in 1991 in which he wrote, “The many rejections, humiliations and other painful influence (sic) that I underwent during adolescence at home, in high school, and at Harvard have conditioned me to be afraid of people.”

He continued, “This fear of rejection – based on bitter experience both at home and at school – has ruined my life, except for the few years that I spent alone in the woods, largely out of contact with people.”

In an interview with the outlet at the time, David called Ted’s memories of their home life “amplifications or exaggerations of what happened that seem quite unreasonable, though they seem quite real to him.”

Ted also claimed his parents valued his intellect over his emotions. “He was never really seen as a person, as an individual personality,” a high school classmate, Loren De Young, told The New York Times in June 2023. “He was always regarded as a walking brain.”

In his memoir after his arrest, Ted claimed that when he was 12 years old, his father called him “sick” and compared him to an acquaintance who was in a psychiatric institution, according to The New York Times.

“My mother imitated him in this respect,’’ he wrote in the book, per the outlet. “And from then on until I was about 21 years old, both parents would apply to me such epithets as ‘sick,’ ‘immature,’ ‘emotionally disturbed,’ ‘creep,’ ‘mind of a 2-year-old.’ ”

While in prison, Ted was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, which has been debated, per the Indiana Law Journal.

In 1990, Ted’s father, who had received a terminal cancer diagnosis, died by suicide, per The Washington Post.

While Ted didn’t attend the memorial service, he had a brief conversation with his mother over the phone, per the outlet.

When David told Wanda that Ted was the suspected Unabomber, she was in disbelief, she told The Washington Post in July 2001.

After Ted was sentenced, Wanda tried to communicate with him while he was in prison. She told the outlet that she wrote to Ted often and sent him news clippings related to the environment and other subjects she thought he’d be interested in. She also said she sent him commissary money.

“I write him short notes and tell him that I think about him all the time and that I hope he is well,” she said at the time. “In one of the first letters, I said, ‘I want you to know that I have always loved you and always will.’ ”

However, Ted did not respond to her letters, per the newspaper.

In 2007, David notified Ted that their mother was suffering “a serious health crisis,” according to The New York Times. He urged him to reach out to her, but Ted didn’t want to talk. In 2011, Wanda died at the age of 94, per the publication.
